Meta to stop end-to-end encryption support on Instagram: Date and what it means for users
Meta has announced it will stop supporting end-to-end encrypted direct messages (DMs) on Instagram. The company has hailed this feature as a gold standard for user security, and its retirement marks a major shift in how the social media giant handles private conversations. According to a recent update on Meta’s official support pages, the encryption feature will officially be pulled on May 8, 2026.

Why Meta is bringing this change

Meta’s reasoning for the move is straightforward: lack of interest. Despite the high-profile debates surrounding digital privacy, the company revealed that the vast majority of Instagram users never actually engaged with the encrypted chat options.Since the feature is being removed entirely, users who currently have active encrypted conversations need to act quickly as Meta is advising these users to follow in-app instructions to download any messages or media they wish to save.“End-to-end encrypted messaging on Instagram will no longer be supported after May 8, 2026. If you have chats that are impacted by this change, you will see instructions on how you can download any media or messages you may want to keep. If you’re on an older version of Instagram, you may also need to update the app before you can download your affected chats,” the company said in an update on its support page.

What end-to-end encryption technology

End-to-end encryption is a technology which ensures that messages and calls can only be read or heard by the people in the conversation – Not hackers, not third parties and not even Meta itself.
“End-to-end encrypted messages and calls ensure only you and the people you're communicating with can see or listen to what is sent, and no one else, not even Meta, can do so. Keep in mind, for reporting and optional features, you or someone in the chat may still choose to share messages with Meta,” the company said in a statement.Meta’s encryption has long been a controversy. While privacy advocates argue that E2EE is essential for protecting journalists, activists and everyday citizens from surveillance, others like Law enforcement agencies and child safety organisations see it differently. This is because they argue that encryption creates “dark corners” where predators can target children without fear of detection. After May 8, all Instagram messages will revert to standard delivery. While they are still protected by Meta’s general security protocols, they will no longer have the “unbreakable” cryptographic shield that E2EE provided.
