Elon Musk’s SpaceX to offer Starlink in-flight Wi-Fi service to American Airlines passengers soon: What to expect

Elon Musk’s SpaceX to offer Starlink in-flight Wi-Fi service to American Airlines passengers soon: What to expect
American Airlines has announced plans to install SpaceX’s Starlink satellite internet service across more than 500 narrowbody aircraft, bringing upgraded in-flight Wi-Fi capabilities to passengers beginning in the first quarter of 2027. The airline said the rollout will cover a large portion of its Airbus narrowbody fleet, including upcoming deliveries of A321XLR and A321neo aircraft. The move adds American Airlines to a growing list of carriers adopting Elon Musk-owned SpaceX’s Starlink service for onboard connectivity.According to the airline, the new system is expected to support streaming, browsing, online gaming, video meetings and real-time communication during flights across domestic and short-haul international routes. In a blog post, American Airlines Chief Customer Officer Heather Garboden said, “As a premium global airline, we are continuously seeking out world-class partners like Starlink to deliver what our customers need and want. The addition of Starlink solidifies American as a leading airline in keeping passengers connected in flight.”

What passengers can expect from Starlink Wi-Fi

Starlink uses a low-Earth-orbit satellite network designed to deliver broadband internet with lower latency than traditional satellite systems. SpaceX said its Aero Terminal technology can provide up to 1 Gbps per antenna for aircraft connectivity. American Airlines said the service is intended to provide more stable internet access during flights, reducing lag during browsing, streaming and online collaboration.
“American is committed to elevating every aspect of our customers’ travel journeys, which in the air means keeping them connected and comfortable with the assurance they won’t have to download documents ahead of a flight or worry about lag time. Starlink’s high speed and low latency make the Wi-Fi more reliable, which matters when customers are trying to load pages, join real-time collaboration tools or stay connected consistently throughout a flight. We are excited to bring an at-home level of Wi-Fi experience to our narrowbody fleet, enabling our customers to work, game, stream and scroll endlessly,” Garboden added.Jason Fritch, Vice President of Starlink Enterprise Sales at SpaceX said, “We are proud to bring Starlink on board American Airlines, delivering fast and reliable internet to passengers and crew. Whether traveling for leisure or business, Starlink enables a fully connected experience gate to gate, making every flight smoother and more enjoyable.”The announcement marks another aviation partnership for Starlink as airlines continue upgrading onboard internet systems to attract customers looking for better connectivity while travelling.According to CNBC, American Airlines had reportedly been evaluating both Starlink and Amazon’s Project Kuiper-based Leo service earlier this year before selecting SpaceX’s offering. The airline currently uses a mix of Viasat and Panasonic systems across parts of its Boeing fleet and said there are no immediate plans to replace those services.Other airlines, including United Airlines, Southwest Airlines and Alaska Airlines, have also selected Starlink for in-flight Wi-Fi services. Delta Air Lines, meanwhile, announced earlier this year that it plans to use Amazon’s Leo connectivity service starting in 2028.American Airlines had already introduced free in-flight Wi-Fi earlier this year for members of its loyalty programme, following similar moves by other major US carriers. The partnership also comes ahead of SpaceX’s planned public offering next month. According to a recent filing, the company’s connectivity business, including Starlink, generated $11.39 billion in revenue last year, accounting for 61% of SpaceX’s total sales.
