Edelson PC CEO says in an open post on LinkedIn: If anyone has ever doubted how reckless ChatGPT-maker OpenAI is, my case should end the debate as ...
Edelson PC CEO Jay Edelson has filed a case against OpenAI, asking the court to permanently block her former partner from using ChatGPT. According to the court filing, the 53-year-old San Francisco claims that she is in “immediate danger” further alleging that OpenAI had been warned for months that the user was becoming dangerous. Her lawyers argued that the company failed to take action despite repeated concerns. Edelson also shared a LinkedIn post where she wrote: “If anyone has ever doubted how reckless OpenAI is, our new case should end the debate.”

Key allegations by Edelson PC

In her lawsuit, Edelson PC has alleged that OpenAI failed to act even after receiving multiple warnings that her ex, a ChatGPT user posed a risk. According to the lawsuit, the company was alerted at least three times, including through its own internal safety systems, but did not take sufficient steps to restrict the user. The law firm also claims that ChatGPT contributed to the user’s mental decline by reinforcing his false beliefs instead of correcting them. It said the AI supported his delusions, including claims that he had made major discoveries and that powerful people were watching him.Edelson further alleged that the user used ChatGPT to create detailed content that he later used to harass and stalk his former partner. This included reports and messages that were shared with her family, friends and workplace.
The lawsuit also states that OpenAI briefly suspended the user’s account after it was flagged for dangerous activity, but later restored access. Edelson argues that this allowed the behaviour to continue. In addition, the firm has accused OpenAI of withholding important safety information, including details of possible threats discussed by the user, and not taking stronger action despite clear signs of risk.

Here’s what she wrote on LinkedIn

If anyone has ever doubted how reckless OpenAI is, our new case should end the debate. There is a live situation where OAI has information about a dangerous person who has been coached by ChatGPT into embracing a delusional conspiracy-laden world. He had threatened the life of our client has already proven he is willing to follow through on his violent plans (assault with a deadly weapon and a bomb threat). After Soelberg, Tumbler Ridge and FSU, you would think that Sam and OAI would cooperate with us to make sure more people aren't harmed. Instead, we get the standard shrug. Tomorrow they will put out another statement saying how much they care and how they are working to implement more safeguards. As the New Yorker laid bare, nothing coming from OAI or Sam should be taken at face value. They are a uniquely immoral company. It is frightening that they control some of the most powerful consumer technology known to humans.

OpenAI suspends ChatGPT account

In a statement to The San Francisco Standard, OpenAI said it has suspended the relevant ChatGPT accounts. “We are reviewing the plaintiff’s filing to understand the details, and with current information, we’ve identified and suspended relevant user accounts,” spokesperson Jason Deutrom told the publication.
