Apple plans a standalone Siri app and 'Ask Siri' button for iOS 27

Apple is planning one of the biggest changes to Siri in years. Bloomberg's Mark Gurman reports that the company is testing a dedicated Siri app for iPhone, iPad, and Mac—codenamed Campo—alongside a new "Ask Siri" toggle that will be baked into menus across built-in apps. Both are expected to be unveiled at WWDC 2026, which kicks off June 8.

The standalone app brings something Siri has never had: a persistent conversation history. Users will be able to browse past chats in a list or grid, pin favourites, search across interactions, and pick up where they left off. The interface borrows from Messages—chat bubbles, a text entry field, and a voice/text toggle—and will also let users upload documents and photos for analysis. When starting fresh, Siri will suggest prompts based on past usage.

Siri is moving into the Dynamic Island

Apple is testing a redesigned Siri interface that lives within the Dynamic Island rather than lighting up the screen's edges. After activation, it prompts users to "Search or Ask," displays a pill-shaped "Searching" indicator while processing, and expands into a translucent Liquid Glass panel once results are ready. Spotlight search is also reportedly being folded into this unified interface, giving Siri access to more on-device data than the current setup allows.




Google Gemini is powering the new Siri

The revamped Siri runs on updated Apple Foundation Models built alongside Google Gemini—part of a roughly $1 billion deal the two companies confirmed in January, per Bloomberg. It will pull from personal data like messages, notes, and emails, and return web results with summaries and images, putting it in closer competition with Perplexity and Gemini's own search tools. A "Write with Siri" option is also being tested at the top of the keyboard, making Writing Tools easier to access than they currently are.

Given how many times the Siri overhaul has slipped—most recently from early 2025 to now—WWDC will be the real test of how much has actually shipped.
