Samsung has said that it is winding down sales of the Galaxy Z TriFold – the $2,899 (approximately Rs 2.68 lakh) phone, just three months after it first hit shelves. According to a report by Bloomberg,m the phone was intended to be a high-tech trophy for Samsung’s engineers rather than a mass-market product for the average consumer. Samsung did not launch the phone with ‘two-hinges’ in India.The report says that the first signs of the TriFold’s retirement appeared on Samsung’s official website this month. The Samsung website, instead of teasing future restocks, now simply lists the phone as “sold out.” A company spokesperson confirmed the strategy to the publication, saying:Sales will be halted immediately in Samsung's home market, and in the US, sales will continue only until the remaining inventory is cleared.Despite the official wind-down, a few units are still said to be floating around. As per reports on Reddit and other social media platforms suggest that a small number of devices have been spotted at Samsung Experience Stores in Frisco, Texas, and Queens in New York – essentially making it tech collectors item.Apart from the price, the report pointed out that the reason for an early exit is that it was meant only for a tiny group of “early adopters”. The phone unfurled from a standard-sized phone into a massive 10-inch tablet. Moreover, unlike the Galaxy S or Z Fold series, the TriFold was never sold by mobile carriers like Verizon or AT&T.Won-Joon Choi, COO of Samsung’s Mobile Experience Business, recently noted that while a “TriFold 2” isn’t guaranteed due to manufacturing complexity. The report also says that some of the device’s core benefits, like a widescreen aspect ratio for media consumption, may come to Samsung’s less expensive foldables over time. For now, Samsung is shifting its focus to the newly launched Galaxy S26 Ultra, which emphasizes AI features and a new "Privacy Display" over experimental screen folding.
