Whether your suitcase goes missing in transit or arrives looking like it has been through a tumble dryer, knowing your rights can save you time and money. But remember, the key is to stay calm and act fast. Under India's Carriage by Air Act/ DGCA rules, airlines are liable up to Rs 20,000 per passenger for lost/damaged baggage domestically. Here’s a quick guide to help you take the right steps to track, report, and claim compensation for your lost or damaged checked-in bag.Step 1:Immediately file a PIR (Property Irregularity Report) at the airline's baggage counter. Stay calm and do not leave the airport without filling the form duly. Step 2:Once you have filed the form, collect the PIR reference number along with a copy of form, baggage tag and your boarding pass.
Step 3:Within 7 days (for damage) or 21 days (for delay/loss), submit a written claim to the airline with itemised list, photos and proofs.Step 4: You can follow up your claim via the airline's grievance /DGCA's "Know Your Rights" portal.
