Son Of Thanjai action game set In 11th-century India is now official: What we know so far
A new action-adventure game inspired by the history and culture of the Chola Empire has been officially unveiled. Titled Son of Thanjai, the game is being developed by Chennai-based Ayelet Studio and is set in 11th-century South India, a period rarely explored in mainstream video games. The studio recently shared its gameplay trailer, offering a detailed look at the game's setting, combat mechanics, protagonist and world design. The title is currently in development for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S and PC, though a release date has not yet been announced."I grew up hearing stories about the Chola dynasty, an empire that ruled South India for over four centuries and built trade networks that reached China and Rome. But I never saw that world in a game. Not once. That’s why we’re building Son of Thanjai," the studio said while introducing the project.

Son Of Thanjai: Story, gameplay and more

Players take on the role of Vinnendiran, a 19-year-old Chola prince whose life changes after losing his family, throne and social standing. According to the developers, the story focuses on his journey through a kingdom facing invasion, famine and political instability."You play as Vinnendiran, a Chola prince who loses everything – his family, his throne, his identity – and is forced to live among the very people he once overlooked. As he moves through a land fractured by invasion and famine, the journey becomes less about reclaiming power, and more about who he becomes in the process,” an Xbox Wire blog post noted.
The game follows an alternate-history interpretation of the Chola Empire, allowing the developers to blend historical inspiration with fictional storytelling."Cast out, Vinnendhiran travels a kingdom at the height of its power and on the edge of collapse: temple crowns crowded with merchants and pilgrims, fertile river plains, dangerous frontier roads, occupied settlements, and courts thick with ambition. Some still believe in the Cholas. Others have suffered because of them. Most are simply trying to survive. The farther he travels from the throne he lost, the more he learns how little he ever understood the people he was born to rule, and how much he will need them,” the blog post added. One of the central gameplay features is the Surul Vaal, a flexible whip-like sword from South Indian martial traditions. The weapon serves as the foundation of the combat system and introduces a different fighting style compared to conventional swords."The first thing you’ll notice is the weapon. The Surul Vaal is a flexible, ribbon-like blade that coils when sheathed and lashes out in sweeping, unpredictable arcs, forcing you to manage distance and timing in ways traditional weapons don’t,” the blog post added. The developers said the combat system is also influenced by Kalaripayattu, an ancient martial art known for its fluid movement and weapon-based techniques. Gameplay footage shows Vinnendiran using the Surul Vaal against enemy soldiers, with combat focused on movement, timing and crowd control. The open-world setting is divided into multiple regions, including agricultural plains, forests, coastal trading hubs and arid landscapes. According to Ayelet Studio, the design is inspired by the ancient Tamil concept of "Tinai," which links geography with culture, economy and identity. The developers have also incorporated cultural elements into daily life within the game world. Players will encounter Therukoothu performances, toddy shops and traditional occupations such as jaggery-making as part of the environment rather than optional background details.
