John Cena retired from WWE in 2025
John Cena announced at the 2024 Money in the Bank Premium Live Event that 2025 will be his final year as an in-ring competitor. The Cenation Leader kicked off his farewell tour on the debut episode of RAW on Netflix in January. Cena accomplished some incredible feats in his final run as a WWE superstar, such as winning a record-setting 17th World Championship and completing the Grand Slam by capturing the WWE Intercontinental title from Dominik Mysterio.
At the same time, the fans also witnessed a brief run of Cena as a heel. It lasted for a few months until Cena reverted to being a babyface. In his final performance inside the squared circle at December's WWE Saturday Night's Main Event, The Never Seen 17 battled Gunther in a singles showdown. Despite putting up one of the best matches of his career, Cena shockingly lost the match by tapping out to The Ring General.
Image via WWEThat was the last time fans saw Cena on WWE live television so far. While he is still signed with the company as an ambassador, Cena has made it clear that his legacy as an in-ring competitor has ended and that he won't return for any one-off matches.
