On October 23, a new lawsuit was filed against Vince McMahon, along with his wife, Linda McMahon, and WWE concerning the infamous ‘Ring Boy Scandal’ that emerged in the early 1990s. The lawsuit names five survivors referred to as John Does 1-5, as plaintiffs. It alleges that McMahon and WWE neglected and failed to address the sexual exploitation of underage boys.
The scandal first gained public recognition in 1992 when former announcer and head of the ring crew, Mel Phillips was accused of sexual exploitation. Despite the termination of Phillips, Terry Garvin, and Pat Patterson, the latter was reinstated to the company and remained there until he died in 2020. The lawsuit claims that the plaintiffs only recently discovered that WWE and McMahon knew about the abuse.
In response to this allegation as well as others against McMahon, his attorney, Jessica Rosenberg issues a statement to Brandon Thurston describing the claims as “untrue and unfounded.” She referenced an article written over 30 years ago by columnist Phil Mushnick, which also reported similar allegations.
Rosenberg emphasized that those claims were never substantiated and resulted in a defamation lawsuit against Mushnick. She characterized the negligence claims against McMahon as relying on what she termed “absurd, defamatory and utterly meritless statements” from that earlier article. Speaking in defense of the ex-WWE boss, he said,
“More than 30 years ago, the columnist Phil Mushnick tried to make headlines with these same false claims. Those allegations were never proven and ultimately became the subject of a defamation lawsuit against Mr. Mushnick.“The negligence claims against Mr. McMahon that were asserted today rely on these same absurd, defamatory and utterly meritless statements by Mr. Mushnick. We will vigorously defend Mr. McMahon and are confident the court will find that these claims are untrue and unfounded.”
The ongoing legal battle adds another layer to a long and complicated history for the McMahon family and WWE. As the story unfolds, the implications of these lawsuits could have significant repercussions for McMahon. The public will be watching closely as these serious allegations are examined in court, potentially shedding light on past actions and decisions made by WWE and McMahon.
