Paris Olympics 2024 Day 3 Highlights: Manika Batra becomes first ever Indian paddler to reach last 16 in Games history

Paris Olympics 2024 Day 3 Live Updates: Manika Batra on Monday became the first Indian table tennis player to reach the round of 16 in the Olympic Games singles competition after a 4-0 thrashing of higher-ranked Prithika Pavade of France in Paris.

The 29-year-old Manika, gold medallist at the 2018 Commonwealth Games, won 11-9 11-6 11-9 11-7 against her 19-year-opponent Pavade whose parents were originally from Puducherry before shifting to France in 2003.

In the Tokyo Olympics, Manika had become the first women's table tennis player from India to make it to the round of 32 in singles. She did one step better than that here on Monday.

Achanta Sharath Kamal had also reached the round of 32 in men's singles in the Tokyo Olympics.

Manika is currently ranked 28th in the world, 10 places lower than Pavade.

Manu Bhaker was poised to make more Olympic history as she positioned herself for an unprecedented second medal. Meanwhile, the men's hockey team managed an underwhelming draw, a fourth-place finish broke Indian hearts at the shooting range, and the archers capitulated.

For a second consecutive day, Bhaker was the standout for India, combining with Sarabjot Singh to reach the bronze medal match in the 10m air pistol mixed team competition at Chateauroux's shooting range. They will face the Korean pair of Oh Ye Jin and Lee Wonho, who shot 579, in the bronze-medal match. If successful, Bhaker will become the first Indian to win more than one medal in a single edition of the Games.

Another medal opportunity slipped away on Monday when debutant Arjun Babuta, despite a strong start, finished fourth in the 10m air rifle men's final. Bhaker, who had already made history by becoming the first Indian woman shooter to win an Olympic medal with her 10m air pistol individual bronze on Sunday, and Sarabjot, scored 580 to stay in the race for a third-place finish in the mixed team air pistol event.

In the 10m air rifle women's competition, Ramita Jindal finished seventh. Shotgun marksman Prithviraj Tondaiman ended 30th and last in the trap competition qualifications with a score of 68/75.

India was joint 23rd in the medal tally with one bronze, while China, Korea, and Australia occupied the top three positions.

Lakshya Sen triumphs on the badminton court

Forced to start afresh after his opening win was nullified, Lakshya Sen showcased his skill by defeating Belgium's Julien Carraggi in straight games in a men's singles group match. The 22-year-old Olympic debutant beat Carraggi 21-19, 21-14 in a 43-minute contest. Sen’s initial victory over Tokyo Olympics semifinalist Kevin Cordon was voided after the Guatemalan withdrew due to a left elbow injury. Sen will next face third seed Jonatan Christie of Indonesia, the reigning Asian champion, to determine who advances to the pre-quarters.

Hockey team escapes with a draw against Argentina

Captain Harmanpreet Singh converted a last-minute penalty corner to salvage a 1-1 draw for India against former champions Argentina in a Pool B match. The Indian team missed nine penalty corners before Harmanpreet scored. Argentina missed a penalty stroke by Maico Casella in the 36th minute, and Lucas Martinez scored a field goal in the 22nd minute to put Argentina ahead. Harmanpreet’s last-minute goal saved India from defeat.

Archery woes continue
Following a poor performance by Deepika Kumari and Ankita Bhakat's quarterfinal loss, the men's team also faltered. Veteran Tarundeep Rai, along with Dhiraj Bommadevara and Pravin Jadhav, were defeated 2-6 by a young Turkish team in the men's team event quarterfinals. The final score was 53-57, 52-55, 55-54, 54-58.

Bopanna retires from national duty

Veteran doubles specialist Rohan Bopanna announced his retirement from national duty after losing in the opening round of the men's doubles event in Paris. "This will definitely go down as my last event for the country. I totally understand where I am and now, I am just going to be enjoying the tennis circuit as long as that goes," Bopanna said, ruling himself out of the 2026 Asian Games in Japan.

Paris Olympics 2024 Day 3 Live Updates: Dravid on cricket's Olympic debut at LA 2028
An ardent supporter of cricket's inclusion in the Olympics, former India head coach and batting legend Rahul Dravid says the "serious dressing room conversations" that he has heard indicate that players are going to "fight tooth and nail" to be there at the world's biggest sporting event.

Dravid was in the French capital on Sunday to attend a panel discussion on 'Cricket at the Olympics: Dawn of a New Era', celebrating the sport's inclusion in the 2028 Los Angeles Games, at the recently inaugurated India House.

"I've already heard a few conversations in the dressing room. People are talking about the 2026 T20 World Cup, there is an ODI World Cup in 2027, and you hear people saying there is the Olympics in 2028," Dravid, who also caught up on some tennis action at the Games before coming for the event, said during the discussion.

"People are going to want to win that gold medal, stand on the podium, and be a part of the Games Village, a great sporting event, and interact with so many athletes.

"As you get closer, I have no doubt that teams will be preparing and checking out facilities. They will take this seriously, and players will fight tooth and nail to be out there," he added.

Paris Olympics 2024 Day 3 Live Updates: Swimming training cancelled for a second day over Seine water quality
Paris Olympics organisers cancelled the triathlon swimming training session for the second day in a row on Monday, with 24 hours to go until the men's race, after heavy rain affected water quality levels in the Seine.

Fifty-five triathletes are scheduled to line up at 8 a.m. (0600 GMT) on Tuesday on a floating pontoon next to the Pont Alexandre III and dive into the Seine, marking the first time athletes have competed in the river at an Olympics since 1900.

The women's individual race is scheduled for Wednesday, also at 8 a.m.

A swimmable Seine is a key legacy Games organisers aim to leave behind for Paris residents.

France has invested some $1.4 billion in new wastewater infrastructure to cut the amounts of sewage flowing into the river, and city authorities have announced plans for three swimming sites to open to the public by June next year.

Sunday's training session was also cancelled after tests carried out on Saturday showed water quality did not meet the required threshold.

The running and bike training sessions remain unaffected.

Paris Olympics 2024 Day 3 Live Updates: India's women archers crash out
Even their favourite music couldn’t soothe the nerves of Indian archers as the women’s team cracked under pressure when it mattered the most, floundering against Netherlands in the quarterfinals of the team event at the Esplanade des Invalides on Sunday. The Indian team ended up with a few sixes and an unbelievable stray shot, that fetched just four points, by top archer Ankita Bhakat as they went down 0-6 (51- 52, 49-54 & 48-53) at the scenic venue that faces the majestic Hotel des Invalides.

The spectators were taking comfort from the mist sprayers to beat the heat, but the weather, hovering in the mid 20s, couldn’t have been an excuse for the hardworking Indians. “What a horrible start!” shouted a journalist from the media tribune, as Ankita opened with a seven.

Bhajan Kaur followed with an 8 before Deepika Kumari rounded up a poor start with a 7. Though the Indians came back strong in the second half of the set with scores of 9, 9 & 8, Netherlands bagged the first set and took a two-point lead edging India 52-51.

The Indian trio showed signs of a fightback hitting two 10s and an 8 but Ankita spoiled the fine comeback with a poor arrow that fetched just six points. Bhajan tried to undo the damage with a 10 but Deepika, who was below-par in the ranking rounds, gifted it to Netherlands by firing another six.

Netherlands easily won the set 54-49 and doubled their lead to 4-0. It was now do-or-die for the Indians.

Ankita opened with a disastrous four but Bhajan, the only Indian to get two 10s, fired another 10 but Deepika again failed to hit the inner-ring. The writing was now on the wall as Indians ended with scores of 8,8 & 10.

Netherlands, who were never under any pressure, eased to a 58-53 win in the third set and triggered the celebrations as the Indian team looked shell shocked.

Paris Olympics 2024 Day 3 Live Updates: Manu does not want to talk about the Tokyo heartbreak
Manu does not want to talk about the Tokyo heartbreak but did say that it gave her important lessons.

“Whatever happened in Tokyo was probably because of my carelessness, probably my fault. Let us leave that part behind. There were so many lessons there. If I had not learnt from them, this would not have come. Tokyo was a valuable input on the road to Paris. I told myself last night that I would give my best. Dekhi jayegi! Aage Bhagwan dekh lenge (will see how it goes; god will take care of the rest).”

“After Tokyo, I became religious. But not in a fanatic way. For me, God is some form of energy which guides us through life. It is like an aura around us. I believe in that.”

Paris Olympics 2024 Day 3 Live Updates: 'I was fined 40 to 400 euros'
On having won an Olympic medal at such a young age, and being destined for bigger things, Manu said:

“It feels surreal. Have dreamt of this for years. Yes, top of the world. I did miss the silver by 0.1 point, but I have no complaints. This medal is for all of us, our country. I would like to thank everyone who has helped me on this journey – my coach, other Indian coaches, my parents, Sports Authority of India...everyone"

“But there is no time to celebrate. I have to compete in many more events. Yes, you cannot be at the top of your game all the time and I have become used to it. I will still give my best in the upcoming competitions.”

Paris Olympics 2024 Day 3 Live Updates: Manu calls Jaspal Rana 'special'
Tell us about your special bonding with your coach Jaspal Rana.

He is special. He made the training so difficult for me that shooting here was easy. We worked very hard on the technical areas. His style of coaching is so different. He would often give me very difficult targets. If I failed to achieve them, he would make me donate a certain amount of money to the needy. It would be 40 euros one day, 400 euros the other day. - MANU BHAKER

Paris Olympics 2024 Day 3 Live Updates: 'I was not tense'
“Oh my god! So many phones! I have so many options,” Manu Bhaker exclaimed, happiness shining through her voice, as she looked at the tray which held at least 20 mobile phones of eager Indian journalists who had gathered in the mixed zone to speak to the shooting star on Sunday.

She laughed some more, not apprehensive anymore of what would come her way. She had the medal around her neck to give her confidence. She looked unburdened. The questions came in a hurry. What was going through your mind last night Manu?

“I was not tense. I read the Bhagavad Gita a lot. And you know those famous advice which Lord Krishna gave to Arjun: 'Apna karm karo, phal ki chinta mat karo (Just do your work, don’t think of result). So I knew I just had to give my best.”

Paris Olympics 2024 Day 3 Live Updates: 'Manu’s medal is an answer'
Taking a dig at the naysayers who were once again questioning the coach-player duo, he said: “There are a lot of gurus in our country, experts who will predict things, pull down people, also try to take credit. Manu’s medal is an answer to their negativity. It made her mentally tougher. I am proud of what she has achieved.”

And what does he think of her chances in the upcoming events? Any favourites?

“She did not win a quota in 10m air pistol but has won a medal. There are no favourites for us. Every competition is tough. No time to rest, we have work to do,” he said.

Paris Olympics 2024 Day 3 Live Updates: How Manu Bhaker buried the hatchet with coach Jaspal Rana
Paris Olympics 2024 Day 3 Live Updates: How Manu Bhaker buried the hatchet with coach Jaspal Rana

Jaspal Rana and Manu Bhaker had an infamous fallout a few months before the Tokyo Olympics. There was a lot of infighting within the shooting contingent which went to Tokyo.

After a disastrous outing by Manu and the other Indian shooters who failed to win a medal, dirty linen was washed in the public.

Rana was even blamed by the national federation for creating a rift in the team. However, Manu realized that parting ways with Rana had hampered her growth and went back to his coaching stable to prepare for Paris 2024.

After Manu’s medal here, Jaspal did not want to talk about controversies but did say: “Well, there were problems, small problems. They became big because of some people. But Manu and I worked hard to overcome those hurdles,” he said.

“She has put in a lot of hard work. If someone gives me 100% in training, I will give back 200%. Otherwise, I lose interest. Manu has worked very hard and deserves whatever she is getting in return.”
