About Equestrian

History of Equestrian
Equestrian events have been part of the Olympic Games since 1900. They include dressage, show jumping, and eventing, showcasing the bond between horse and rider.
How is Equestrian Played?
Equestrian sports at the Olympics represent a unique partnership between athletes and horses, showcasing a blend of athleticism, skill, and harmony between rider and horse across three main disciplines: dressage, show jumping, and eventing.
Dressage: Often referred to as "horse ballet," dressage is a discipline that emphasizes the horse's obedience, flexibility, and precision of movement. Competitors perform a series of predetermined movements and patterns in a rectangular arena. Judges evaluate the harmony between the rider and horse, the correctness of the movements, and the overall impression of grace and fluidity.
Show Jumping: Show jumping tests the horse's agility, speed, and jumping ability over a series of obstacles within a defined time frame. Riders navigate a course of brightly coloured fences, aiming to clear them cleanly without knocking down rails. Penalties are incurred for faults such as knockdowns or refusals. The objective is to complete the course within the fastest time possible with the fewest penalties.
Eventing: Eventing is a comprehensive test of all-around horsemanship, combining dressage, cross-country jumping, and show jumping over several days. The competition starts with dressage, where riders demonstrate their horse's obedience and precision in movements. Cross-country tests the horse and rider's endurance, bravery, and skill over a varied terrain dotted with natural obstacles like fences, ditches, and water jumps. The final phase, show jumping, evaluates the horse's fitness and agility after the demanding cross-country phase.
