Why Jason Robertson was left off Team USA’s Olympic roster despite an elite NHL season
The absence of Jason Robertson from the Olympic roster of Team USA did not come as a surprise, but it still hit hard the fans who thought that his recent performances in the NHL made him too big to ignore. When the roster was released officially on Friday, it was the public whose decision was confirmed after the quiet signals for weeks that Robertson was unlikely to be among those going to the Games had spread.
Behind the scenes, the writing was already on the wall. Robertson was informed on New Year's Eve, and some very knowledgeable sources in the league were already discreetly suggesting the result. The headline, to a great extent, was sudden for the public, but the insiders of USA Hockey had been conscious that the selection process had been tilting in the contrary for quite some time.
When looking at the statistics, Jason Robertson was a perfect candidate for the Olympics. He was the second-highest scorer in the NHL and the top American player in the league point-wise in the 2025 calendar year, which would normally make a player a near guarantee for Team USA. However, ESPN's Michael Russo reported that Bill Guerin, the general manager of USA Hockey, had a different priority in the evaluation of the roster; one that went beyond raw numbers and was heavily dependent on stylistic fit.
The evaluation was made considering the position of Robertson and the policy of USA Hockey. There is no question regarding his scoring ability; however, his defense impact has always been an issue; some of the league managers even think that he is too attacking for international hockey, although statistics support him as a more versatile contributing player.
USA Hockey has, since the 1980 Olympic run, preferred players with specific roles and structure over the most offensively gifted lineup. Even in a tournament without NHL-style limitations, they would opt for the grind over the glitz. The selection of Robertson would mean breaking away from that tradition, and apart from a wave of injuries that would have made it unavoidable, the door never really opened.
It was not Jason Robertson's lack of talent or effort that resulted in his exclusion from the Olympics. He missed the whole thing due to USA Hockey's sticking to its identity, which did not leave much space for a player who was never completely in its picture.
