P.K. Subban defends Alex Ovechkin of Washington Capitals in NHL-NBA greatness debate online

P.K. Subban has not been afraid of vocalising his opinion in the past, and this time, the ex-NHL defenseman is the one making headlines over his very ardent defence of NHL-NBA rival Washington Capitals captain Alex Ovechkin in a fiery NHL debate.

Subban made the remarks when fans were drawing comparisons between the record achievements by Ovechkin in the number of goals scored by him in the history of the NHL and the records made by LeBron James in terms of scoring in the NBA.

In the discussion, P.K. Subban said that Alex Ovechkin has to be accorded special respect due to the nature of the sport he is in and its longevity. As much as he admitted that LeBron James is great in the NBA, Subban heavily objected to the suggestion that the two professions can be compared to each other in terms of performance.

Subban brought out the fact that the two leagues have the same regular seasons of 82 games, yet the physical workload is very different. To him, the fact that the NHL schedule exposes Ovechkin to contact on a nightly basis, body wear, and the height of the overall intensity of the NHL schedule alone contribute to the even greater longevity of his career. The comparisons were also described by Subban as borderline insulting, indicating that the argument has not taken into account how punishing basketball can be compared to punishing hockey.

The comment of the former Montreal Canadiens defenseman immediately became a trending topic, but the fans celebrated that the former player defended hockey, and others criticised him for shooting in the NBA unnecessarily.
