The Bruins are not searching for cosmetic fixes. They need players who can stabilize the lineup now while still fitting the long-term picture. That balance is hard to strike, but recent league chatter suggests Boston may have found an intriguing opportunity hiding in plain sight. The solution might come from a rival, one dealing with its own frustrations and unfinished experiments.
Boston Bruins explore Matias Maccelli trade fit
According to NHL analyst Fluto Shinzawa of The Athletic, Boston could find value in Toronto Maple Leafs winger Matias Maccelli, a 25-year-old forward whose role has diminished this season. Shinzawa believes the fit makes sense on several levels.
“The left-shot winger would give the Bruins some offensive help in their top nine,” Shinzawa wrote. “He is also 25 years old, which fits the Bruins’ cycle in terms of building for the future while going for a playoff spot.”
Maccelli arrived in Toronto during the 2025 offseason but has struggled to gain traction in the Leafs’ system. With just 13 points in 26 games, his production has not matched expectations, and healthy scratches have become part of his routine. For a skilled winger, confidence and opportunity often go hand in hand. Boston could offer both.
A change of scenery has revived many NHL careers, and Maccelli’s skill set suggests untapped upside rather than decline. For the Bruins, the appeal lies in the low-risk nature of the move. His contract is nearing its end, and Toronto’s desire to reshape its roster could open the door to a favorable deal.
Maccelli is not the only name circling Boston. Analyst Michael DeRosa has also linked the Bruins to Calgary Flames defenseman Rasmus Andersson, another player drawing league-wide interest.
“Andersson is one of the NHL’s top trade candidates, as he is a pending unrestricted free agent (UFA) and the Flames are having a poor season,” DeRosa said. “If the Bruins acquired him, he would significantly upgrade their top four and would also give them another option for their power play.”
While trade talks simmer, Boston has taken modest internal steps, activating Matej Blümel and Michael Callahan from injured reserve and assigning them to Providence. Bigger decisions, however, still loom. For a Bruins team searching for answers, the next move could define their season.
