Marcus Johansson’s 1,000th
NHL game wasn’t just another milestone– it was a moment drenched in emotion, family pride, and years of perseverance. The 35-year-old forward, who has battled injuries, trades, and transitions across seven NHL teams, reached the rare 1,000-game mark on Sunday night at the Grand Casino Arena as the Minnesota Wild shut out the Calgary Flames 2-0. It was a night where Johansson didn’t just show up for the record books–he played his heart out, sparking the game-winning play that sealed another Wild victory.
“We’re really lucky to have him,” linemate Matt Boldy said after the win. His words echoed what the entire locker room felt. For a team that’s fought hard to regain rhythm this season, Johansson’s steady brilliance has been a guiding light. With the win, his career-best point streak stretched to nine games–a testament to his consistency even after all these years.
Wild forward Marcus Johansson celebrates 1,000th NHL game with emotional family moment
“It’s hard to realize it’s happened,” Johansson said. “You try and not think about it too much and not worry about it, and then all of a sudden, it’s there. I’ll enjoy this, for sure.”
Johansson’s journey to this point has been anything but smooth. His first stint with the Wild in 2021 ended prematurely after a broken arm cut short his playoff hopes. From there, he bounced between Seattle, Washington, New Jersey, Boston, and Buffalo before Minnesota brought him back in 2023–a move that proved invaluable.
His chemistry with Matt Boldy and Joel Eriksson Ek has transformed their line into one of the team’s most dangerous trios. “When he has the puck, that’s when stuff happens,” Boldy said.
The Wild honored Johansson before Tuesday’s matchup against San Jose, but the most touching tribute came from his family. His daughters, Mila, 9, and Elize, 5, surprised him in the locker room before puck drop, with Mila reading the team’s starting lineup. Later, in a heartfelt video shared on the Wild’s X handle, the girls said, “Congratulations dad, we are so proud of you. I love you dad.”
“House is full,” Johansson said with a smile. “I’m gonna go home and have a beer and enjoy it.”
For a man who’s given everything to hockey, there couldn’t have been a better way to celebrate–surrounded by family, love, and the game that’s defined his life.
