The Detroit Red Wings started strongly by scoring the first goal of the game just 3:20 into the first period when Moritz Seider scored. The defenseman scored with a wrist shot past the New Jersey Devils’ goaltender.
The Detroit Red Wings made the score 2-0 midway through the second period when James van Riemsdyk scored with a power play goal. The veteran forward scored from in front of the net at 6:37 of the second period with a deflection of a point shot past the Devils’ goaltender.
The game took a strange turn in the second period when John Gibson, who had made all 21 saves he faced, was injured in a collision in the crease. Cam Talbot took over in the third period and made 10 saves to shut the door for the Red Wings.
The duo became the first goaltender duo in the Detroit franchise history to shut out the opponent since 2014 when Jonas Gustavsson and Jimmy Howard did the job for the Red Wings.
Detroit closed the game with 9:36 remaining in the regulation period when Dominik Shine was finally able to score in the NHL. The 32-year-old forward, making only his fifth appearance this season and 14th in the NHL, scored a snapshot into the net to close the scoring. Seider and van Riemsdyk assisted on the goal for Shine, which was a milestone goal years in the making.
The game was also the Detroit debut for the team’s new defenseman, Justin Faulk, who was acquired from the St. Louis Blues on Friday. Detroit moves further into its four-game road trip with the win, while the Devils will now attempt to bounce back from the loss to snap their winning streak.
