The Toronto Maple Leafs made headlines ahead of NHL free agency by signing forward Matthew Knies to a six-year, $46.5 million extension. While the front office sees the deal as locking in a crucial piece of their young core, fans across the league remain divided on whether the 22-year-old winger has truly earned the $7.75 million average annual value.

Praise for Toronto’s proactive approach, but not without caution

Matthew Knies, who just wrapped up his entry-level deal, had a breakout 2024–25 season with 29 goals and 58 points in 78 games. His performance helped solidify his place on Toronto’s top line, where he also played on special teams and tallied seven points in 13 playoff games. The Maple Leafs are clearly betting that this past season was a sign of long-term growth.
Some fans applauded the Leafs for acting before Knies hits the open market. One supporter @Fantastic-Nature3167, “Toronto signing key players to less than market value deals, well that's new.” Another supporter @flowbeezer wrote, “What a steal by Toronto. He def took a discount.”Others highlighted how Toronto has historically struggled to sign players below market value. Still, a vocal section of the hockey community sees risk in paying Knies top-dollar based on one strong campaign.
Another user @Skiffy10 bluntly stated, “7.7 is not a discount. I’d say that what his value is. Peterka put up 68 points for the awful sabres and he got the same amount roughly. Knies is lucky he got that amount honestly. Should been 6.5 ish.” Some critics questioned whether Knies is a true play driver, especially given his line assignments. With the salary cap projected to hit $113 million by the 2027–28 season, the deal may look more favorable in the future. If Knies continues to develop and produce at a high level, this extension could age into a team-friendly bargain. Also Read: “People felt betrayed”: Wayne Gretzky’s ties with Donald Trump resurface and spark heated debate in CanadaBut for now, Matthew Knies’ massive payday has lit up hockey forums with a familiar debate: reward potential early, or wait until it’s proven over time?
