NFL shuts down viral Super Bowl conspiracy theory about “scripted” matchup

Super Bowl week always brings hype. This time, it also brought a full-blown internet theory. After the Seattle Seahawks and New England Patriots locked in a Super Bowl LX matchup, fans rushed online with screenshots of an old NFL graphic that looked a little too convenient. Within hours, people claimed the league had quietly revealed the matchup months ago. The posts spread fast across X, Instagram, and fan forums. Some fans laughed. Others treated it like real evidence.

The image at the center of the storm first appeared on Sept 4, 2025, the opening night of the NFL season. It showed star players from all 32 teams walking toward the Lombardi Trophy. At the time, it worked as a simple hype graphic. Now, fans see something else. In the picture, quarterbacks Sam Darnold of Seattle and Drake Maye of the Patriots stand near the front of the group. That detail fueled the idea that the NFL “leaked the script” before the season even kicked off.

The noise got loud enough that the league addressed it directly. Recently, NFL vice president of communications Brian McCarthy responded on X. “Re: the ‘controversy’ over this image — no,” McCarthy wrote from his verified account while replying to posts about the theory. His message made the league’s stance clear. The graphic did not predict the Super Bowl, and the season was not scripted.


A closer look at the same image weakens the conspiracy. Baker Mayfield appears just as close to the trophy as Darnold. Malik Nabers stands in a similar spot. Their teams did not even reach the playoffs. NFL stars like Patrick Mahomes, Josh Allen, and Lamar Jackson also appear in the front cluster. Designers focused on balance and star power, not future standings.

This is not the first time fans built theories around visuals. In recent years, people claimed that the Super Bowl logo colors predicted the teams. The NFL even joked about “script writers” in a past promotional ad. The meme stuck around, and every postseason brings a new version.

This time, the league answered quickly and moved on. Fans will keep joking. The NFL says it was just a coincidence, nothing more, during a season that already delivered enough real drama on the field.
