Manny Fernández cause of death: Two time Super Bowl champion and Miami Dolphins defensive star dies at 79

The Miami Dolphins announced the death of former defensive star Manny Fernández on Monday, bringing sadness to one of the most historic franchises in NFL history. Fernández, who played a major role in the Dolphins’ famous undefeated 1972 Super Bowl season, died at the age of 79. The team confirmed the news in a social media statement but did not reveal an official cause of death.

Fernández was one of the key names behind Miami’s dominant defense during the early 1970s. He helped the Dolphins win back to back Super Bowls and became part of the only team in NFL history to finish a full season unbeaten. That perfect 1972 campaign ended with a 14 to 7 victory over the Washington Redskins in the Super Bowl. One year later, Miami won another title after defeating the Minnesota Vikings 24 to 7 in Super Bowl VIII.

The Dolphins remembered Fernández as a selfless player whose work often helped others around him shine. In the team’s statement shared online, the organization said, “His consistent and selfless contributions on the field were fundamental to the Dolphins’ success.”

Even though Fernández never became as nationally famous as some other NFL stars from that era, people around the league respected how important he was to Miami’s defense. Many longtime Dolphins fans still believe he deserved even more recognition for what he accomplished during the franchise’s greatest years.

Fernández was born in Oakland, California, and came from Mexican heritage. According to an older ESPN feature, the Dolphins originally signed him in 1968 hoping to strengthen their connection with Latino fans in South Florida. ESPN reported, “The Miami Dolphins signed tackle Manuel José ‘Manny’ Fernández in 1968 to add a Latino presence to their roster and connect with Latino fans, but to the team’s disappointment, the player of Aztec roots did not speak Spanish.”

Still, Fernández quickly became known for much more than marketing value. His toughness and discipline made him an important piece of coach Don Shula’s defense. He spent his entire NFL career with the Dolphins before retiring in 1975.

At the moment, no family statement has shared additional details about his passing. The cause of death also remains unknown. Across social media, former teammates, fans, and NFL followers continued posting tributes while remembering Fernández’s role in one of football’s most unforgettable teams.
