Josh Allen receives clarity as Buffalo Bills’ head coach search narrows after Philip Rivers turns down opportunity
The Buffalo Bills are entering one of the most important stretches of the Josh Allen era, and clarity around their head-coaching search is slowly taking shape. After moving on from Sean McDermott, the franchise knows that time is of the essence, and the process needs to be done sooner. It was reported earlier that former quarterback Philip Rivers was interviewed for the job, but ended up turning it down.
Now, insider Tom Pelissero is revealing that the Bills are now zeroing in on candidates who fit both Allen’s timeline and the organization’s long-term vision. They are now reportedly having David Webb of the Broncos do a Zoom interview for the vacant position. This new consideration is significant as Webb has a long history with Allen.
Pelissero added that Buffalo has already engaged with multiple candidates who understand the organization’s history and the pressure that comes with the job. He continued, “The Bills have also spoken to Joe Brady and Brian Daboll, two guys with history in the building, and to Lou Anarumo, the Colts’ defensive coordinator. I would still anticipate they may still add, whether it’s Nate Scheelhaase or Mike LaFleur, they may add some additional names of guys who just became available to them today as well.”
The rejection from Philip Rivers did not surprise many inside the league. While his late-2025 return with the Colts showed he could still play, the leap from high school coaching to an NFL head coaching job was massive. As NFL Media's Mike Garafolo reported, Rivers ultimately chose family stability over a high-pressure role, a decision the Bills respected.
It is safe to say that it has not been a smooth ride for the Bills in their search for a head coach. A capable coach who can elevate Allen’s strengths and help the team nab a Super Bowl in the future is a necessity at the moment. The Bills may have hit a brief setback as of now, but they are sure to announce a worthy candidate for the role in the near future.

Buffalo’s offensive focus signals urgency around Josh Allen’s prime
NFL insider Tom Pelissero confirmed that Buffalo continues to prioritize interviews, with a clear emphasis on offense. He said on the Rich Eisen show. “The Buffalo Bills are still going through their process, and they’re talking with Davis Webb today on Zoom. Webb is the Denver Broncos’ quarterbacks coach and passing game coordinator, played several years in the league, and is really close with Josh Allen (he was in Buffalo backing him up).”Pelissero added that Buffalo has already engaged with multiple candidates who understand the organization’s history and the pressure that comes with the job.
