“I think they’ll win”: Jason Kelce explains why he trusts the Eagles to handle 49ers in playoff opener
The Philadelphia Eagles open their playoff journey, where they will be facing off against the San Francisco 49ers. The Wild Card matchup at Lincoln Financial Field is already being labeled one of the most compelling games of the opening round. With Super Bowl expectations still very much alive in Philadelphia, former Eagles center Jason Kelce has weighed in on possible outcomes of the game.
Speaking on the WIP Morning Show, Kelce praised San Francisco’s quality while making it clear he believes the Eagles have what it takes to beat them. Kelce believes the Eagles’ offense is built for elite-level playoff football, especially when quarterback Jalen Hurts is fully involved as a runner. Kelce also expects improvement up front, adding confidence in the offensive line’s ability to control the trenches against a physical 49ers front.
He pointed to Seattle’s recent 13-3 win over San Francisco as a blueprint worth noting, saying. “I think the defense has rebounded extremely well from that game.” He emphasized health as a key factor, observing how the unit is stronger now than it was earlier in the season.
Kelce also highlighted the importance of limiting Christian McCaffrey and forcing San Francisco into uncomfortable third-and-long situations. He added, “They're almost like a modern-day NBA defense.” They're long and fast, and they close the distance so well. And I really do think Philly does that very well.”
Oddsmakers seem to agree with Kelce, installing Philadelphia as a 4.5-point favorite. Still, he made it clear that this will not be simple. He emphasized that despite the 49ers being a great team, it won’t be an easy task for the Eagles. However, he has all the confidence in the Eagles and declared, “I think they’ll win.” The two juggernauts will go against each other on January 11, 2026, at Lincoln Financial Field.

Why Kelce believes Philly’s defense can flip the script
On the show, Kelce stated, “I think we're going to come out here and run the ball pretty well,” Kelce said. “I think we're going to play actions off it. I think we're going to run Jalen Hurts, which is an advantage. That's a major advantage for us.” While much of the attention falls on the Eagles’ offense, Kelce made it clear that defense could decide the outcome. He pointed to Seattle’s recent 13-3 win over San Francisco as a blueprint worth noting, saying. “I think the defense has rebounded extremely well from that game.” He emphasized health as a key factor, observing how the unit is stronger now than it was earlier in the season.
