The Kansas City Chiefs are navigating an offseason defined by uncertainty at quarterback, a position that has rarely raised concern during the
Patrick Mahomes era. Mahomes’ torn ACL has left the organization without a firm return timeline, and while optimism remains, there is a realistic possibility he may not be ready for the opening weeks of the 2026 NFL season.
That uncertainty has forced the Chiefs to think pragmatically about their short-term options. Rather than focusing on long-term upside or dramatic roster moves, the priority is maintaining offensive structure early in the season while allowing Mahomes the time needed to fully recover. The discussion now centers on finding a quarterback capable of steady execution without disrupting the broader identity of the team.
Why Gardner Minshew makes sense as a temporary solution for Kansas City

NFL insider Nick Shook believes the simplest option may also be the most effective, pointing to Gardner Minshew as a logical short-term answer for Kansas City. Minshew served as Patrick Mahomes’ primary backup during the 2025 season before suffering a late-year knee injury of his own, one that was not ACL-related and is expected to heal ahead of Mahomes’ recovery timeline. That difference alone places him in position to be available earlier, should the Chiefs need coverage at the start of 2026.
“Minshew suffered a season-ending knee injury of his own, but it wasn’t an ACL tear,” Shook wrote. “He should be ready to play sooner than Mahomes, bringing veteran backup experience to a Kansas City team that suddenly needs it more than ever.”
Beyond health, Minshew’s familiarity with Andy Reid’s system carries added weight. He understands the playbook, the weekly preparation demands, and the expectations inside the locker room, reducing the adjustment period that often comes with outside additions. For a team coming off a surprising 6–11 season, minimizing early disruption will be a priority.
Shook also pointed to Minshew’s performance in 2023, when he stepped in for Anthony Richardson in Indianapolis and kept the Colts in postseason contention. That stretch reinforced his ability to manage games, protect the football, and keep an offense operational under pressure, traits that align with what Kansas City would require in Mahomes’ absence.
Though Minshew’s personality and play style can sometimes overshadow other aspects, the value here is consistency over spectacle. If Mahomes misses some time, the goal is less to match elite production and more to maintain competitive functionality until he returns. Viewed through that angle, re-signing Minshew reflects a practical decision grounded in stability and realistic expectations.
