NEW DELHI: Flag football is set to make its Olympic debut at the 2028 Summer Games in Los Angeles, opening the possibility for NFL players, including stars like Tyreek Hill and Patrick Mahomes, to compete for Team USA.
The inclusion of flag football in the Olympics is seen as a significant milestone for the non-contact sport, which has gained popularity at various levels, including being incorporated into the NFL's Pro Bowl activities.

Flag football is played with a five-on-five format on a field that is 50 yards long, about half the size of an NFL field. The game features no linemen, and players aim to score by reaching the opposing team's end zone while avoiding having their flags removed by defenders.
The introduction of flag football to the Olympics offers a new avenue for NFL players to showcase their skills on a global stage and adds excitement to the sport's growth and development.

While the upcoming 2028 Olympics will feature flag football as an invitational sport, the long-term goal is to establish it as a permanent fixture in the Olympic movement.
With enthusiastic participation at various levels, including high school varsity sports and collegiate programs, flag football's inclusion in the Olympics could further propel its popularity and encourage more young athletes to engage with the sport.
As the journey to the 2032 Brisbane Games is already being considered, the flag football community is working towards solidifying its status as a recognized and lasting Olympic sport.
