The Dolphins head into the offseason facing a hard decision about Tyreek Hill. Releasing him outright would create a large dead cap charge and is widely viewed as the least appealing option.
All of this is happening while Miami faces broader cap challenges, even with the leaguewide salary cap expected to rise. The Dolphins are trying to stay competitive while also keeping future flexibility intact, and Hill’s deal sits right at the center of that balancing act. Any discussion about Hill naturally brings up his past. He once referred to the Kansas City Chiefs as “home,” and his six seasons there helped define one of the most explosive offenses in the league. Drafted in the fifth round in 2016, he quickly became a star, earning a Pro Bowl nod as a rookie and topping 1,000 receiving yards by his second season.
Over six years in Kansas City, Hill piled up 479 receptions, 6,630 yards, and 67 touchdowns, including a legendary 269-yard, three-touchdown performance against Tampa Bay in 2020.
For now, Hill is still a Dolphin. But between his health, his contract, and Miami’s cap reality, his future in South Florida is anything but certain. The next few months could decide whether this partnership continues or ends with another blockbuster move.
