The Miami Heat are sixth in the Eastern Conference despite missing their best player, Jimmy Butler, for most of the season. Despite the team’s incredible achievement, the front office doesn’t seem to have too much faith in its roster. According to various reports, the Heat is currently working on opening up $80 million in cap space for the summer. If successful, this will leave the team in a position to sign an all-star caliber player.

Miami Heat Could Land an All-Star Without Trading Jimmy Butler
According to a report by the Miami Herald, the Heat has been reluctant to take on any all-stars whose contract runs beyond the 2025-26 season. In recent weeks, the Heat have lowered their demands for Jimmy Butler, At first, it seemed like the Phoenix Suns would be able to land a deal for Butler, but no one seems to be willing to take on Bradley Beal’s contract. Beal has a no-trade clause and $110 million left in salary, so moving him will be difficult for the Suns.
As a result, the Heat has now lowered its asking price for Jimmy Butler. Teams who were earlier discouraged by trading for Butler have entered the fray again.
Golden State Warriors are said to be in the mix along with the Minnesota Timberwolves. The Heat are interested in acquiring the services of Julius Randle, so Butler to the Timberwolves looks like a possibility, at the moment.
However, as we stated above, the Heat is not looking to get any stars in return because the team wants to save money for free agency. Many players, including Luka Doncic, will become free agents following the 2025-26 season. Now, if the Heat can save money in the salary cap, they can sign some of the biggest stars in the league during free agency.
But we do have to consider that things have changed quite a lot since Kevin Durant moved to the Warriors in 2016. These days, some of the biggest stars don’t even make it to free agency and end up signing extensions or agreeing to a sign-and-trade with their current team. If this happens in the summer of 2026, the Heat will be left empty-handed, and saving cap space will ultimately translate to nothing.
