Golden State Warriors' lack of cap space will prevent them from acquiring $95 million star

The Golden State Warriors have been in fine form to start the season and have won 12 of their first 16 games. At the time of writing, the team sits on top of the Western Conference and has been enjoying a stretch of good-quality basketball. However, this could all come to an end soon as injuries have started to take a toll on the Bay Area lineup.
The team recently lost De’Anthony Melton, who was proving to be an invaluable asset. Melton was coming off the bench for the Dubs and was making an impact unparalleled to the others. Unfortunately, De’Anthony will be undergoing surgery to fix his ACL and will be out for the rest of the season. So Steve Kerr will now need to look for another solid option on his bench.
One player who could’ve easily replaced Melton on the Warriors’ bench is Cam Johnson from the Brooklyn Nets. Unfortunately, the 28-year-old has a $95 million contract that the Warriors can’t quite afford at this time. The Dubs were interested in Cam during the summer and probably regret not making a deal for him back then.
The Warriors could try to offload a couple of players along with Melton. However, no one on the roster besides Stephen Curry can help them free $95 million in cap space. So, the Dubs will now need to look for other alternatives if they wish to maintain their winning momentum.

We have to remember that Steve Kerr has been using a 12-man rotation system this season. This means that everyone who is part of the game plan will end up playing a significant role in each match. Melton was shining in this system and made solid offensive and defensive contributions for the Warriors.

While Cam Johnson would’ve easily matched his contributions, the Dubs’ money situation won’t allow them to make such a move. For the time being, Golden State’s best option is to pick up a free agent on a vet minimum contract. Anyone who can pour in a few points on offense and has intensity on defense will prove to be an invaluable signing for the Warriors.
