Wrestlers' Protest News Live: Concerned UWW to appoint observer for WFI elections

"Concerned" about the ongoing turmoil in Indian wrestling, United World Wrestling (UWW) President Nenad Lalovic has demanded clarity on who is running the sport in the country, and in its response the WFI has complained of "government interference" in their matters. Lalovic shot a letter to the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) on April 28 and marked a copy to Indian Olympic Association (IOA) President PT Usha and International Olympic Committee (IOC) official J Poivey.

We told her (PT Usha) that we want justice. We don't have a fight with the government or opposition or anyone else. We are sitting here for the betterment of wrestling. If this issue is resolved and if the allegations (against WFI president Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh) are proved then there should be legal action

Initially when she (PT Usha) said that, we felt very bad but then she said that her comments were misinterpreted. She said that she is first an athlete and then an administrator

We are much better than people like PT Usha and Mary Kom. If former athletes such as them can't support us, it's a matter of shame. Such adversities give us strength. We don't want them to sit here with us. We just want them to be truthful and support us. We have already sacrificed our training and sport. But this cause is bigger than all. I have been hearing since my childhood that a politician can't be trusted. Wo na baap, maa, pati aur patni kisi ke sage nahi hote hai and ye in logo ne mujhe prove kar diya hai (They (politicians) are not even faithful to their father, mother, husband or spouse and these people (Usha and Mary Kom) have proved that to me). These are the people I grew up watching and aspired to become like them. But I have learnt my lessons the hard way. Probably I was destined to learn the ways of the world this way. I always looked up to Usha ma'am. Growing up, we wondered if we will ever be able to see Usha, Sachin Tendulkar sir, Sania Mirza etc in flesh and blood. I still remember watching these people on TV in our small village house. We have come from that humble background. So, if a woman athlete can't understand your pain, it hurts more.

This protest is far more important for us than participating in any wrestling championships. We are needed here and not on the wrestling mat. We didn't give our names for the ranking series because Singh is still roaming around freely and hasn't been arrested.

Yes, we were provided with the security cover but we refused to accept it. We told the PSOs to leave. If we are not safe at Jantar Mantar, then we can't be safe anywhere. We are protesting here peacefully with our brothers and sisters from the wrestling community. We don't want any security.
