Dustin Poirier’s boxing dream blocked as Dana White’s Zuffa Boxing sticks to a strict no-crossover policy
Dustin Poirier has always been one of the finest fighters inside mixed martial arts. His clean striking and sharp combinations were on full display in his dominant wins over Conor McGregor in their recent fights. Even after retiring from the UFC, Poirier’s passion for combat sports has not faded. Instead, he has been exploring the idea of stepping into a boxing ring under the new Zuffa Boxing banner.
However, that plan has hit a major setback. Despite his popularity and proven skills, Zuffa has shown little interest in allowing MMA fighters to cross over into boxing under its promotion. This decision has raised questions among fans and fighters alike. Many believe Poirier vs Nate Diaz in a boxing match would have been a massive draw, but the promotion seems focused on a different long-term vision.
Dustin Poirier openly shared that he wanted to try professional boxing after retiring from MMA. He explained that he had already discussed the idea with the promotion and even suggested a fight against Nate Diaz at a suitable weight. For Poirier, it was not about a long comeback but just one exciting bout to close an unfinished chapter in his career.
He indicated that even in retirement, he remains tied to the UFC through his contract. Because of that, he cannot freely take part in boxing events without approval. He also hinted that the promotion is not interested in crossover fights at this stage. In his view, the company wants to build credibility in the boxing world and avoid mixing MMA fighters into that setup too early.
Speaking on JRE MMA Show #176, Poirier suggested that allowing one fighter to cross over could open the door for many others. That could create complications in managing fighters and maintaining structure. From a business perspective, he believes the promotion is trying to avoid that scenario, even if it means turning down potentially lucrative fights.
Dana White has been consistent with this approach. Since launching Zuffa Boxing with Turki Alalshikh, he has made it clear that MMA fighters will not be part of the boxing roster. The aim is to build a separate identity rather than rely on crossover appeal.
For Poirier, this decision is disappointing. He made it clear that a fight with Diaz was the only bout that could have brought him out of retirement. Their rivalry dates back years and was never settled inside the cage.
Now, with Diaz moving in a different direction and signing new deals outside the UFC system, the chances of that fight happening under Zuffa appear slim.
