Top 5 most overrated MLB players ever and why the hype didn’t match the results

For any Major League Baseball player, hype is always created before their performance, and at times, they fail to live up to it. Certainly, there are fewer players listed as the most overrated players in Major League Baseball, as they have failed to match their performance metrics.

However, in this situation, the team appointed them as their player in the major leagues fail to align with the performance. Certain players are always predicted to be talented and, as per the expectations, they are hyped to give a high and elite performance on the ground.

Here is the list of the top five players who failed to match the performance metrics in Major League Baseball:

In the first position comes Bo Jackson, who is widely recognised as the athlete of his generation for his ultra-talented gaming style. He entered baseball and started playing just as a hobby, which later transitioned into a professional career. However, when he performed on the real ground, his action failed to deliver as expected. In his eight-year career, Bo Jackson never became a star player for an extended period. Followed by the second position, Brien Taylor, who was drafted by the New York Yankees in the year 1991, as the number one player and was recognised as a super talent of fast ball drawing when compared to Dwight Gooden.

Further, he was also estimated to have received a $1.55 million signing bonus from the New York Yankees. In return, Brien Taylor never matched the level of game that he showed at the start of his career, as he never managed to pitch above AA, and later suffered a shoulder injury, which slowed down his game. Since he was drafted as number one by the New York Yankees, Brien Taylor was the only player at number one who never managed to reach the major leagues.


In the third position comes Joe Carter, who was considered an all-star five consecutive times, and he was considered one of the star players in his prime game days in the year 1993. However, even after being recognised as a star player and having won the World Series, Joe Carter was considered a below-average fielder, as his recorded score was below average for a baseball player to be in the Major League.

The fourth position goes to Kris Bryant, who was once a player of the Chicago Cubs. Kris Bryant has been remembered as one of the players who signed a major deal with the Colorado Rockies of around $182 million, making him one of the highest paid player. He was also expected to be inducted into the Hall of Fame of Major League Baseball. However, as per the delivery of his performance on the ground, Kris Bryant suffered a major injury, and his major contract was a waste for the team as well as for him because he missed around 478 games.

The last position goes to Mark Appel, who was again drafted as the number one baseball player by the Houston Astros in the year 2013. While choosing a player from the draft session, Mark Appel was recognised as a safe player for the team from his college days. As a result, Mark Appel was underconfident during his MLB career and suffered several injuries, leading to underperformance on the field.
