The most anticipated minor league player of the season, Roki Sasaki, is lately having issues with control, which is clearly affecting the Dodgers' performance. Sasaki’s latest performance shows a clear sign of how the player is struggling in MLB, which is raising talks of the team demoting him back to the minor leagues.
Will the Dodgers really send Sasaki back to the minor league? Why is Sasaki not performing well? Will the Japanese fireball appear in the upcoming games?
Roki Sasaki struggling against the Detroit Tigers
Sasaki made his Dodgers stadium debut with the Los Angeles Dodgers last Saturday. The team was facing Detroit Tigers and had a lead of 4-0 when they sent Sasaki to bring them victory.
What was meant to be a memorable debut, turned out to be a nightmare. Sasaki was seen struggling badly with the ball, due to which he was pulled out after 1.2 innings. In the limited innings, Roki allowed two runs and four walks. Walking back to the pavilion, the 23-year old was seen with red teary eyes.
In his MLB debut against the Chicago Cubs in Tokyo Dome, Sasaki had an average performance, even though he made his first major league strikeout in that match. Combining his debut performance, Sasaki has delivered a total of 4.2 innings where he allowed 9 walks with 4 strikeouts, taking his ERA to 5.79, and WHIP to 2.79.
The stats are quite concerning and it is yet to be seen whether he will be playing in the upcoming matches or not.
Dave Roberts on Roki Sasaki’s recent performance
Even after Sasaki’s poor performance on the field, the Dodgers’ manager, Dave Roberts, still speaks in support of the player.
When asked about his viewpoint on the star player’s wavering debut, Roberts replied, “
He wants to perform. All he’s known is success (since his minor league days). And so I think that he’s certainly upset, disappointed. But you got to be a pro and get back to work. It’s not the first time that a starting pitcher has had two bad outings. And so again, this is all the learning curve, and we still got a good ball club, and we’re going to need him.”
Roberts’ statement shows his confidence in Sasaki, giving hope that the player will be seen in the upcoming game against the Phillies.
