The
New York Mets are preparing to move on from
Cedric Mullins after his disappointing stretch since being acquired in a midseason trade. Once seen as a potential offensive spark, Mullins’ performance has fallen short of expectations, raising questions about the team’s plans for center field moving forward.
Cedric Mullins’ struggles with the New York Mets
When the New York Mets traded for Cedric Mullins, the hope was that he could rediscover his form from earlier in the year with the Baltimore Orioles. While Mullins has flashed offensive talent throughout his career, he has largely been average at the plate. He began the season as one of Baltimore’s more consistent hitters but hit a wall just before being dealt.
Since joining the New York Mets, things have only worsened. His production has ranked among the lowest in Major League Baseball over the past few months, making him a liability in a lineup that is expected to compete at the highest level.

The organization is exploring multiple paths to address the position. While some fans are eager to see a top prospect called up, insiders suggest that the front office will prioritize a steady veteran presence in the short term.
SNY highlighted Carson Benge as a possible future option. Benge’s breakout season in the minors has certainly drawn attention:

The 22-year-old reached Triple-A in his first professional season after excelling against High-A and Double-A pitching.
His strong slash line of .308/.413/.513 and extra-base hit production make him one of the more exciting young players in the system.
Balancing prospects and veterans
Despite Carson Benge’s success, bringing him up immediately presents risks. The Mets have expectations of competing for a World Series each season. Throwing a young prospect into that environment without proper transition time could hinder development.
Joe DeMayo of SNY pointed out that the team will likely lean toward experience: “I envision the Mets being sure they are covered from a veteran standpoint, ideally on a short-term deal to not block young players like Benge, Williams, or Ewing, who could potentially hold down center field before long.” (H/t: Sporting News)
This approach ensures that prospects such as Benge, Jett Williams, and Drew Ewing are not rushed into everyday roles, while still leaving the door open for them to take over in the near future.
Mullins’ uncertain future
If the New York Mets intend to play Carson Benge or another prospect in 2026, Cedric Mullins’ tenure with the organization may end soon. With free agency looming, his struggles all but guarantee he will not be retained unless there is a significant turnaround.
