Trump UNGA Speech Live Updates: Donald Trump assures '100%' support to UN after criticising it in speech

Trump tells the top UN official that the US is behind the global body '100%' after fears he might announce full retreat, reports AP.

US President Donald Trump, addressing the UNGA, rejected efforts by some nations to recognise a Palestinian state, calling it a "reward" for Hamas. He also reiterated his call for a ceasefire and an end to the ongoing conflict in Gaza.

"As if to encourage continued conflict, some of this body is seeking to unilaterally recognise a Palestinian state. The rewards would be too great for Hamas terrorists for their atrocities," Trump told world leaders at the UN.

His remarks came in response to several European nations announcing their decision to recognise a Palestinian state during a summit at the UNGA on Monday. While the move was largely symbolic, it added to Israel's diplomatic isolation. Washington, however, has made clear it does not support the step.

Recognising a Palestinian state, Trump warned, "would be a reward for these horrible atrocities, including October 7, even while they refuse to release the hostages or accept a ceasefire." He urged a different course of action, stating, "Instead of giving in to Hamas' ransom demands, those who want peace should be united with one message: Release the hostages now, just release the hostages."

Trump emphasised the urgency of halting the war in Gaza, adding, "We have to stop the war in Gaza immediately. We have to stop it. ... We have to negotiate immediately. Have to negotiate peace. We got to get the hostages back."

United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said Tuesday that cuts to aid budgets were "wreaking havoc" as he opened the organization's annual meeting of world leaders, painting a dark picture of the world order.

"But development aid cuts are wreaking havoc. They are a death sentence for many. A stolen future for many more," he said without mentioning the United States, responsible for many of the cuts, whose president will speak shortly after Guterres.

"This is the paradox of our time: we know what we need -- yet we are pulling away the very lifeline that makes it possible."

In a doom-laden speech, Guterres pointed to worsening crises in a growing number of countries and warned of the risk of nuclear proliferation.

"Far too many crises continue unchecked. Impunity prevails. Lawlessness is a contagion. It invites mayhem, accelerates terror, and risks a nuclear free-for-all," he said.

He did hold out a glimmer of hope, pointing to the ceasefire brokered between Cambodia and Thailand, and the agreement between Azerbaijan and Armenia, "brokered by the United States." (AFP)

Donald Trump will also meet Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on the margins of the high-level 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly.

Trump has repeatedly claimed that he “ended” the conflict between India and Pakistan, but New Delhi has repeatedly maintained that its ceasefire discussions took place solely with Islamabad.

Sharif is being accompanied by Pakistan Army chief Asim Munir, who is making his third visit to the US since the conflict with India ended.

The US president is scheduled to meet several world leaders on the sidelines of the UNGA meet. He will hold several high-profile bilateral meetings, including with UN secretary-general António Guterres, and the leaders of Ukraine, Argentina, and the European Union.

Ukraine's Volodymyr Zelenskyy is expected to push Trump for tougher sanctions on Russia, Al Jazeera reported.

This will be Trump's fifth address to the UN General Assembly, and his first since returning to the White House for a second term in January. His speech will take place during the High-Level General Debate, which follows the formal opening of the UNGA’s ongoing session on September 9.

“I think what the president’s going to do is challenge the UN to find its meaning and its purpose and its utility as an organization because it it doesn’t seem to be doing the job,” US secretary of state Marco Rubio said in an interview on “Fox and Friends.”

Rubio noted that in his private life, Trump had once offered to help renovate the UN headquarters in New York but had been turned down.

“I think it’s emblematic of how feckless the UN has become as an organization,” he said. “It’s just a place where once a year a bunch of people meet and give speeches and write out a bunch of letters and statements but not a lot of good, important action is happening. The UN has a lot of potential but it’s not living up to it right now.” (AP)

Donald Trump will address the ongoing 80th session of the UN General Assembly on Tuesday. The US President is expected to deliver a wide-ranging address on his second-term foreign policy achievements and lament that “globalist institutions have significantly decayed the world order,” according to the White House.

He will then take part in a series of bilateral meetings with world leaders across the late morning and early afternoon.

The speech will begin at 9:50 am New York time (7:30 pm in India).
