World No. 3 Alexander Zverev accuses Tennis Channel of disrespect as Italian Open meltdown sparks fresh controversy
Alexander Zverev did not hold back after a new Tennis Channel video sparked unexpected controversy online. The German tennis star openly accused the channel of cutting him out of a promotional clip even though he gave correct answers during the challenge. His strong reaction quickly divided fans on social media, with some supporting his frustration while others mocked his response. The situation added another dramatic moment to a difficult week for Zverev, who also suffered a shocking loss at the Italian Open in Rome. The controversy began after Tennis Channel shared an Instagram video featuring several ATP and WTA players taking part in a Roman Numerals challenge. Players including Tommy Paul, Ben Shelton, Victoria Mboko, Hailey Baptiste and Alexander Zverev were asked to solve questions using a whiteboard and marker. The video showed funny moments from different players, but Zverev later noticed he barely appeared in the final edit.
The World No. 3 reacted publicly in the comments section and questioned why his clips were removed despite answering correctly. Alexander Zverev also suggested the channel prefers showing certain players over others.
“Just a random question @tennischannel why do I do all of these games and all these promotion activities with you guys but then every time I get something right I get cut out of every single one? Just asking if you’re just interested in wasting my time or just hope that I get something wrong so you can then put that in? I know you have players that you love to hate on and players that you love. so just please stop wasting my time then. Thank you,” Alexander Zverev wrote.
The comment immediately created debate among tennis fans online. Some fans agreed with Alexander Zverev and demanded an explanation from Tennis Channel. Others felt the German overreacted and joked about his response. The channel has not publicly replied to his comment so far.
Away from social media, Alexander Zverev also faced disappointment on the court during the Italian Open. The German looked in complete control against Luciano Darderi during their Round of 16 clash in Rome. Alexander Zverev dominated the opening set 6-1 and later moved ahead 5-3 in the second set, appearing ready to close out the match comfortably.
However, Luciano Darderi suddenly turned the match around in front of the home crowd. The Italian forced a second-set tie-break, won it, and then completely dominated the final set. Darderi handed Zverev a 6-0 defeat in the deciding set to complete one of the biggest comeback wins of the tournament.
After the match, Alexander Zverev strongly criticized the court conditions at Foro Italico and blamed the surface for several important moments during the match.
“It was difficult to play. I mean, to be honest, the court, I think this is the worst court I’ve ever played on. Juniors, professional, futures, practice, I never played on a court where the court quality is that bad,” Alexander Zverev said in his press conference.
“I have match point and the ball jumps over my head. I have break point, the ball rolls. Like yeah. Yeah, the wind was tough. Overall, again, I just think I should have won the match in two sets. After that, yeah, he played fantastic,” he added. Alexander Zverev will now shift his full focus toward the French Open, which begins on May 18 in Paris.
