Why Gus Malzahn chose college football retirement at 60 despite still coaching at the highest level
Gus Malzahn has made a decision that marks the end of an era in college football. The national championship–winning coach has announced his retirement at age 60. His announcement came after just one season with Florida State Seminoles, where he served as offensive coordinator.
Malzahn’s name carries weight in college football. He coached for more than three decades and helped shape offenses across the country. From high school fields in Arkansas to the biggest stadiums in the sport, his journey was long and demanding. Now, Malzahn says the time feels right to step away. He shared that the decision was personal and came after careful thought about family and life beyond football.
In 2006, Malzahn returned to Arkansas as offensive coordinator and wide receivers coach. That role helped push him back into the national spotlight. He later became head coach at Arkansas State in 2012. In just one season, he led the Red Wolves to a Sun Belt title.
Malzahn then returned to the Auburn Tigers, where he spent eight seasons as head coach. His first year ended with an SEC title. In 2017, Auburn also won the SEC West. Earlier in his career, his offensive work helped Arkansas defeat Oregon 22-19 in the national championship game in Glendale, Arizona.
After Auburn, Malzahn took over as head coach at UCF in 2021. That role became his final head coaching job. He later joined Florida State for the 2025 season to run the offense under head coach Mike Norvell.
Malzahn confirmed his retirement in a heartfelt statement.
“After 35 years, it’s time for me to step away from coaching,” Malzahn said.
“I am excited to spend more time with my family and focus on the next chapter of my life.”
He also thanked Norvell for the chance to coach at Florida State.
“I want to thank Coach Mike Norvell for giving me the opportunity to coach at such a prestigious program,” he said.
Malzahn added that he will continue to support Florida State from afar.
“I will continue to follow Florida State. And I believe great things are ahead for the program under Coach Norvell’s leadership and for the offense under Tim Harris.”
With that, Malzahn closes the book on a long and respected career.
