Keaton Wagler made sure no one at Mackey Arena forgot his name. On Saturday in West Lafayette, Indiana, the Illinois men’s basketball freshman delivered one of the biggest games in program history. Wagler scored 46 points to help No. 11 Illinois beat No. 4 Purdue 88–82 in a huge road upset.Most of the damage came early. Wagler scored 41 of his 46 points in the first 31 minutes, taking control of the game before Purdue could slow him down. His scoring night set a new opponent scoring record at Mackey Arena, one of the toughest places to play in college basketball.Illinois stayed calm late and finished strong. Tomislav Ivisic, Jake Davis, and David Mirkovic hit key three-pointers in the final minutes. As a team, Illinois made 18 three-pointers, the most in school history. According to Illinois athletics, this win was one of the program’s biggest road victories in recent years, and it came because a freshman refused to play like one.

Keaton Wagler leads Illinois past Purdue with record night

Keaton Wagler was nearly perfect from deep. He went 9-for-11 from three-point range, setting a single-game Illinois record for made three-pointers. No Illinois player had ever made nine in one game before.
His 46 points also tied for the second-most points in Illinois history. Only Dave Downey, who scored 53, has more. Andy Kaufmann also scored 46 in a game back in 1990. For freshmen, this night stood alone. Wagler broke the old freshman scoring record of 35 points, set by Giorgi Bezhanishvili in 2019.This game also boosted Wagler’s season numbers. He is now averaging 17.5 points per game and has made 50 of 115 three-point shots, shooting 43.5% from long range. Before this night, his career-high was 23 points, which came on Dec. 9 at Ohio State.So who is Keaton Wagler? He is an 18-year-old, 6-foot-6 guard from Shawnee, Kansas. He played high school basketball at Mission Northwest High School and will turn 19 on Feb. 3, 2026. Wagler was a four-star recruit and the top player in Kansas for the Class of 2025. He led his team to two straight Kansas state titles.As a high school senior, Wagler averaged 18.5 points, 6.7 rebounds, 4.2 assists, and 1.8 steals, while shooting 59% overall, 45% from three, and 83% from the free-throw line. He committed to Illinois on Sept. 18, 2024, becoming the first player in Brad Underwood’s Class of 2025, according to recruiting records.
