UFC heavyweight Champion Tom Aspinall suffered severe eye damage following fouls from Ciryl Gane, resulting in a no-contest in Abu Dhabi. The injury required double eye surgery and has delayed his return to competition. The fallout did not stop inside the Octagon.
Public reaction soon turned heated. Some online voices questioned the legitimacy of Aspinall’s injury. During the post-fight press conference, UFC president Dana White said the champion “didn’t want to continue.” That comment drew attention across the MMA community. Former UFC fighter Brendan Schaub believes the remark fueled online attacks aimed at the British heavyweight.

Brendan Schaub addressed the situation in a video posted to his X account. He firmly rejected claims that Aspinall exaggerated his injury. “You know how dumb you have to be?” Schaub said regarding those doubting Aspinall’s injury.
“Talking about the guy who grew up in a jiu-jitsu dojo, who’s dedicated his entire life, who is the baddest man walking the planet. He would be faking all this for what? Because it’s Ciryl Gane? No one’s scared of Ciryl Gane.
It’s a great matchup for Tom.
“What makes Dana great is he shoots from the hip,” he continued. “He just says what he says. Right after the fight, you could see how Dana would say that.
“But the issue with that is now that gives energy…so the rest of the UFC trolls jump on that and that just ignites the fire on top.”
Aspinall later shared his frustration during a video documenting his eye surgery. He separated his passion for combat from his frustration with the industry.
“I love martial arts,” Aspinall said. “I absolutely love it. I’ll never stop loving it, but I just hate the business.
“I think that fighters are just completely replaceable and the business will make you feel like that any chance it gets.
Even if you get hit with an illegal move, which could affect the rest of your life, they don’t really [care]. And no one else does either,” he added.
Daniel Cormier shows concern over Tom Aspinall
Further, former champion Daniel Cormier raised concerns about the heavyweight division. Speaking on his YouTube channel, he questioned the overall depth of the weight class.
"Heavyweight is struggling right now," Cormier said. "So what you really need is the best guys fighting to kind of wipe the bad performances out because guess what? Derrick Lewis' last fight in Las Vegas, that wasn't good. It just was not good. Waldo Cortes-Acosta, again, he got beat. He's good, but he's lost fights. It's just not in a great place. Would you say if you put Waldo Cortes-Acosta in there with Ciryl Gane or Tom Aspinall, he'd be competitive?"
Regardless, the debate surrounding White and Aspinall is far from over, as it has been a subject of online discussion for quite a while.
