Marathon champion Shewarge Amare Alene passes away at 30 only four months after Stockholm victory

Ethiopian marathon champion Shewarge Amare Alene, tragically passed away in September 2025 at the young age of 30. Just months prior, she secured a remarkable victory at the adidas Stockholm Marathon in May, clocking in at 2:30:38. Her sudden demise followed an illness during a training run in Addis Ababa.

Shewarge Amare Alene is no more. The Ethiopian marathon champion died in September 2025. She was only 30 years old. Four months earlier, on 31 May 2025, she had won the adidas Stockholm Marathon in Sweden. She ran the race in 2:30:38. Her death came after she fell sick during a training run in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. She was rushed to the hospital but doctors could not save her. Race organisers confirmed the news. They said they were “deeply saddened” to lose their 2025 winner.

Shewarge Amare Alene’s Stockholm win and sudden illness

On May 31, 2025, Shewarge Amare Alene came first in the women's race at the Stockholm Marathon. At 2:30:38, she crossed the line first. This was among her most outstanding acts. In October 2023, she had also set her personal best of 2:27:26.
After the Stockholm victory, she returned home to Ethiopia. In September 2025, she was training in Addis Ababa. During practice, she suddenly felt weak and tired. She was taken straight to the hospital. Sadly, she passed away the same day.The organisers of the Stockholm Marathon released a statement. They wrote: “It is with deep sadness that we received the news of the passing of Shewarge Alene, winner of the adidas Stockholm Marathon 2025.”

Shewarge Amare Alene’s career and legacy

Shewarge Amare Alene ran 27 marathons in her career. She won 12 of them. She also finished on the podium many more times. But she returned to Ethiopia for training in her final months. Friends and teammates remembered her as a kind and helpful runner. A local Ethiopian coach told the press, “We have lost a great athlete and a role model for young girls.”In early 2025, only three months before Stockholm, Alene set a strong time of 2:29:34. That run showed her peak form. Her Stockholm victory in May was the highlight of her season. Her sudden death just months later has left the running world in shock.
