Greg Biffle’s friend receives the final Christmas greeting from the NASCAR champion’s family in a heartbreaking post-crash moment
Fans recognized Greg Biffle as a NASCAR champion, and those who knew him well recognized him as a loving family man. That life came to an end on December 18 when Biffle, his wife, and their two kids died in a plane crash in North Carolina.
The tragedy was made worse by an unplanned delivery three days later. Before the disaster, the Biffle family mailed a Christmas letter to a close friend, which was meant to be a festive greeting but ended up being a farewell.
Biffle, 55, his wife Cristina Grossu Biffle, 35, and their kids Ryder, 5, and Emma, 14, lost their lives when their plane crashed at Statesville Regional Airport. Craig Wadsworth, pilot Dennis Dutton, and his son Jack were also killed in the crash.
On December 21, the family was shown smiling and giving each other hugs on the holiday card. Written before the family seemed to have realized it would be their final letter to friends and family, the message read:
“We hope that you are able to
slow down and enjoy the magic and joy that
this season has to offer.
We hope you have a great New Year!
Sending love,
Greg, Cristina, Emma & Ryder”
Ron Herbert, a family friend who got the card, described the moment as extremely emotional and said that no words were capable of conveying the importance of the Biffles to him.
Spreading festive happiness was the whole point for Cristina Biffle. Cathy Grossu had been helping in the delivery of Santa letters to kids as part of a festive outreach project, as per her mother.
Grossu later revealed that her daughter had sent a quick text message from the aircraft just before the accident, signaling that something was wrong. That was the last of her she recieved which will haunt her for life.
The family was visiting close friend Garrett Mitchell, also known as Cleetus McFarland, in Sarasota, Florida, for his birthday at the time of the accident. After working on Hurricane Helene relief operation, the two men had become close over the past year, with Biffle acting as a mentor in Mitchell's driving profile expansion.
Mitchell gave an emotional tribute after the tragedy, calling the loss an incredible grief and describing his time with Biffle as some of the most memorable moments of his life.
Greg Biffle's Christmas card has become more than just a festive greeting for many who followed his professional and personal journey. It has evolved into a silent, unexpected farewell that came after the family had left.
