From Table Tennis to Art: Timothée Chalamet’s Marty Supreme is reinventing sports biopic

The release of the film Marty Supreme, starring Timothée Chalamet, has become one of 2025’s most discussed topics. The sports movie is directed by Josh Safdie - one half of the Saffie Brothers directorial duo. And the ambitious marketing campaign for the film has blurred the lines between cinema and music, leading to the birth of a companion visual album and soundtrack, whose album cover was recently unveiled.

The movie is set in the 1950s, centered round Marty Mauser - a character loosely inspired by American table tennis player Marty Reisman. But the central figure in the new album cover is graphic designer Earnest, whose avant-garde approach to the Marty Supreme aesthetic has defined the look of Chalamet's latest adventure.

The Marty Supreme aesthetic

The artwork created by Earnest for the Marty Supreme project marks a sharp departure from traditional sports-drama posters. Rather than focusing on a simple portrait of Chalamet as the titular character, the new album cover, which is being used for the Daniel Lopatin-composed official soundtrack, is a masterclass. "Dream Big" which is the phrase that has been used for throughout the movie is also a part of the album.


Chalamet's face is the central focal point, and Earnest captures the protagonist striving for greatness with amazing clarity. His collaboration with Chalamet reportedly began during the film's marketing campaign, and it certainly looks like the duo has been able to create magic.

Marty Supreme: Soundtrack or Visual Album?

While Marty Supreme is a sports biopic, the campaign has treated the Original Motion Picture Soundtrack as a standalone musical event.The album was released along with the film on December 25, 2025, through A24 Music. Composed by Daniel Lopatin, the music features vocals from Weyes Blood and Laraaji, creating a musical world as intense as Earnest's visual art.

The cover art has already been hailed by critics as one of the most significant pieces of commercial graphic design in recent years, successfully bridging the gap between "indie sleaze" and "high-fashion futurism." This collaboration represents a new trend in Hollywood where actors like Chalamet function more like creative heads than just the lead hero. And designers like Earnest ensure that the film feels less like a product and more like an artistic movement.
