Former Chelsea and Germany captain Michael Ballack has spoken publicly for the first time about the tragic death of his son Emilio. The football legend became emotional while remembering the loss during an interview with Sky Germany for the program My Story. Ballack’s 18-year-old son died in a quad bike accident in Portugal in August 2021, a moment that changed the former midfielder’s life forever. The accident happened near the family’s holiday home at the Villas do Mar estate. According to police reports at the time, Emilio had been riding a quad bike on uneven ground when the vehicle rolled backwards and landed on top of him.
Emergency services quickly arrived and tried to revive the teenager, but their efforts were unsuccessful.
He was pronounced dead at the scene. Ballack rarely speaks about the tragedy, but during the interview he shared how deeply the loss has affected him and his family. Even years later, he admitted that talking about Emilio still brings overwhelming emotions.
Michael Ballack says losing Emilio Ballack is something “you cannot describe in words”
During the interview, Ballack struggled to hold back tears while explaining how difficult it is to speak about his son.
After taking a pause, he simply said, “Difficult.” He repeated the word again before continuing.
“You can’t imagine it. You can’t even describe it in words. It’s a process of repression. Everyone deals with it differently.”
The former German international admitted that the pain still feels very strong. “I can hardly talk about him at all,” Ballack said. “I’d like to say much more, but it overwhelms me emotionally.”
Details from the accident in 2021 showed that Emilio had been riding the quad bike near the family’s villa when the vehicle tipped backwards on uneven ground. Firefighters had to remove the bike before medical teams attempted to save him.
A Portuguese police officer told local media at the time, “The accident happened at the family home. The quad rider wasn’t on a public road and his was the only vehicle involved.”
Portuguese newspaper Jornal de Notícias later reported that Emilio may have been reversing the quad bike when he lost control during the maneuver. The vehicle reportedly rolled over and trapped him underneath.
Earlier that evening, the family had been spending time together at the villa. Reports said they had enjoyed a barbecue before the accident happened.
Emilio was the middle child among Ballack’s three sons. His older brother Louis was born in 2001, while his younger brother Jordi was born in 2005.
Speaking about how the tragedy changed his perspective, Ballack reflected on life and fate.
“Life is precious,” he said. “The life we lead is absolutely privileged. Luck and misfortune both play a role. You can call it fate if you want, but things just happen.”
Despite the pain, Ballack said he tries to move forward while keeping his son’s memory close.
“I want to face it,” he said. “That gives me strength again, and at the same time the realization that life goes on.”
