Lucas Di Grassi on retirement from Formula E: “It’s not 100 percent clear that I'll be on the grid next season”

Lucas Di Grassi is currently competing in his 12th Formula E season and continues to arrive at the track with full enthusiasm. The Lola Yamaha ABT driver has been part of Formula E since its introduction in 2014. Amid concerns about his struggling performance, the 41-year-old veteran has raised doubts about whether he will actually race next year, though he has been working on developing the GEN4 car.

Lucas Di Grassi raises doubts over his Formula E future

Lucas Di Grassi had a difficult year last season, though he claimed his much-awaited podium in Miami. This year, he is yet to score any points after five races and is currently at the bottom of the Drivers’ Standings.

On the topic of retirement, Lucas Di Grassi told RacingNews365, "Right now, I have to drive as if I'm going to be driving forever, right? I have to commit myself fully, so I'll decide later on whether I continue or not.”

Adding depth to his response, he said, “But in a nutshell, at this point in my career, I need to understand where I'm more valuable. Am I more valuable driving the car? Am I more valuable doing something else for the championship or for the team? If not next year, then in a few years, I want to take the step toward that. So for me, I need to understand the opportunities where I think I can add more value and then make the decision. So it's not 100% clear that I'll be on the grid next season.”

"But at the moment, with the development of Gen4 and Gen3, I have to try to push as much as I can, because I still need to deliver results for the team," he added.

Lucas Di Grassi has been a pivotal part of Formula E’s existence

Lucas Di Grassi currently has Zane Maloney as his teammate at Lola Yamaha ABT. The team needs to work on improving its performance on track, but the results are yet to come.

Lucas Di Grassi played a pivotal role in the formation of Formula E by lending his technological expertise to develop an electric race car. He was the official test driver for the Formula E prototype car, Formulec. He went on to join Audi Sport ABT to compete in the maiden 2014-15 season and continued to drive for the team until 2021. He went on to win the 2016-2017 Formula E World Championship.

He moved to ROCKIT Venturi Racing in 2022 and then switched to Mahindra Racing in 2023. He returned to Lola Yamaha ABT in 2024 and has been racing for the team ever since.
