Manchester United close in on £62.5 million-rated Wolves striker Matheus Cunha but will wait until later this month before signing him. The Brazilian’s buy-out clause is expected to be activated. The purchase is the first significant move of manager Ruben Amorim's reign as he tries to inject life back into United's attack after a difficult season.
Matheus Cunha's role in Ruben Amorim's tactical setup
The dynamic 3-4-3 setup of Ruben Amorim will see Cunha placed at the heart of the attack, in one of the two no.10 positions behind the central striker. Cunha can play as a second striker or as a wide player, being a good player for Amorim. His tactical experience from similar setups with Wolves as well as past clubs makes his integration into United's XI more seamless.
The 17-goal, six-assist return Cunha put up in 34 appearances for Wolves shows he has what it takes to make a meaningful impact on United’s attack. His quality in the third and final phase of play, his urge to score goals, in addition to the fact that he is able to link the midfield and the attack, would be the ideal solution for United, which needs something for this exact role.
Addressing Manchester United's attacking challenges
United’s failure in the Premier League – they finished 16th with the most home defeats in their history – emphasises the need for attacking reinforcements. The lack of clinical finishing and creativity in the team has been a concern, with manager Ruben Amorim underlining that they need
"fitness, luck and clinical finishing" to get past tough games.
Cunha's signing will be a welcome and energetic addition to Manchester United's attack. His effectiveness in opening up chances and taking them would suit Amorim’s model of a coherent and clinical attacking system. His experience is also thought to bring the best out of those around him, which can create a better attacking infrastructure.
