SL vs BAN: Tigers near 500 runs, record partnership shatters hosts resistance as rain interrupts play

Bangladesh continued their commanding performance on the second day of the first Test against Sri Lanka, finishing at 484 for nine despite some late breakthroughs by the hosts. Resuming at 292/3 overnight, the Tigers capitalized on a batting-friendly wicket, with Mushfiqur Rahim and Najmul Hossain Shanto extending their record-breaking partnership.

The 264-run stand finally ended when Shanto was caught driving in the air for 148, an innings featuring 15 boundaries and a six. Mushfiqur then continued alongside wicketkeeper Litton Das before falling for a marathon 163, a knock that lasted nearly nine hours and 350 balls. Das added further pressure on Sri Lanka with a brisk 90 off 123 deliveries, exploiting tired bowlers and loose fielding, particularly targeting the spinners with effective footwork to lift the ball over the in-field.

Near misses and fielding lapses

Despite Das’s dominance, he survived some anxious moments, including a grassed catch by Pathum Nissanka at short mid-wicket when he had just 14 runs. Earlier, Das had also escaped a run-out due to a mix-up. Nissanka eventually fell attempting a reverse sweep off debutant Tharindu Ratnayake, gloving the ball to Kusal Mendis behind the stumps.

Bangladesh batting coach Mohammad Salahuddin praised the effort, saying, "We were very impressed with the way Mushfiqur Rahim went about things. He had not scored a big one in a while but we knew it was just a matter of time before he scored a big one." He added, "They (batters) showed character and we have almost scored 500 runs now. I hope our bowlers will be able to create opportunities bowling to attacking fields as we have got the runs on the board now. It will be an interesting day three."

Sri Lanka’s bowling challenge on a flat track

Sri Lanka’s Milan Rathnayake described the pitch as one of the "flattest wickets we have seen in Galle," making it tough for bowlers. "It was a tough wicket to bowl on but I thought we did a decent job," Rathnayake said. "When they were building the pressure and taking the attack on to us, it was important to stay calm and show character. I thought after tea we came back stronger to claim five wickets."


Rain interruptions and fading light limited play to just 61 overs on day two, with a persistent drizzle forcing an early tea and play ending prematurely. To make up for lost time, play will resume fifteen minutes early on Thursday.
