NEW DELHI: Rohit Sharma is leaving no stone unturned in his bid for an ODI comeback. The veteran opener was first spotted training under former teammate and renowned coach Abhishek Nayar, working hard to regain match fitness after a break from competitive cricket since the IPL 2025 wrapped up in early June. Amid ongoing speculation about his international future, Rohit climbed to No. 2 in the latest ICC ODI batting rankings released on Wednesday. He leapfrogged Pakistan’s Babar Azam — who dropped to third after a poor ODI series in the Caribbean — and now sits on 756 points, just behind India’s Test skipper Shubman Gill (784). Former captain Virat Kohli remains fourth with 736 points.

Both Rohit and Kohli, who retired from Test cricket earlier this year before India’s England tour, have reiterated their commitment to the 50-over format. The two could return in October’s three-match ODI series against Australia, with training already underway.

Rohit, one of the ODI format’s greatest alongside Kohli, reached his career-best 882 rating points during the 2019 World Cup, when he struck a record five centuries in the tournament. He and Kohli last featured in ODIs during India’s Champions Trophy triumph in the UAE earlier this year.India currently have five batters inside the men’s ODI top 15 — Shreyas Iyer in eighth and KL Rahul in 15th join Gill, Rohit, and Kohli in the elite list.
