New Zealand vs South Africa Highlights, World Cup 2023: South Africa crush New Zealand by 190 runs, jump to top of the standings

NZ vs SA World Cup 2023 Highlights: Quinton de Kock smashed his fourth century of the World Cup and Rassie van der Dussen also hit a ton as semi-finals-bound South Africa sealed a comprehensive 190-run victory over New Zealand on Wednesday for their sixth win in seven matches.

New Zealand were left needing a rescue act after collapsing to 90-5 inside 19 overs while chasing 358, with only Will Young (33) and Daryl Mitchell (24) offering any resistance, but South Africa did not relent and dismissed them for 167 in 35.3 overs.

Pace bowler Marco Jansen (3-31) began the rout with an early double strike, while spinner Keshav Maharaj (4-46) landed timely blows to ensure New Zealand had no way back in Pune despite a defiant 60 by Glenn Phillips.

In a highly-anticipated contest days after the two nations clashed in the Rugby World Cup final, De Kock struck 114 and Van der Dussen exploded late on to score 133 for his second ton of the showpiece as South Africa posted 357-4.

The Proteas built on the pair's 200-run partnership with 119 in the last 10 overs as David Miller put the New Zealand bowlers to the sword with a 30-ball 53 at the MCA Stadium.

South Africa began steadily after New Zealand skipper Tom Latham won the toss and opted to bowl, as they shrugged off the dismissal of captain Temba Bavuma (24) and flexed their muscles with top-scorer De Kock going past 500 runs in the tournament.

De Kock, who will retire from the 50-overs format after the tournament, milked the Black Caps bowlers in a flawless innings and reached his century with a massive six over long-leg off Jimmy Neesham before looking to accelerate.

He scored two more boundaries but offered a simple catch to Phillips at backward point as Tim Southee (2-77) took his first wicket on his return to competitive action after right thumb surgery in September.

Southee castled Van der Dussen on a day of little joy for New Zealand, who had lost the bowling services of seamer Matt Henry due to a right hamstring problem midway through South Africa's innings.

South Africa's Quinton de Kock and Rassie van der Dussen lit up the cricketing world with their remarkable centuries, securing a resounding 190-run victory over New Zealand in their ICC ODI World Cup match at MCA stadium in Pune on Wednesday. Their blazing performances not only enthralled cricket enthusiasts but momentarily shifted the nation's sporting spotlight from rugby to cricket. De Kock's masterful innings of 114 off 116 balls marked his fourth century in the tournament, placing him in exclusive company alongside Kumar Sangakkara, who achieved this feat during the 2015 edition of the World Cup. Notably, only three players in World Cup history have managed to accumulate four centuries in a single tournament, with India skipper Rohit Sharma leading the chart scoring five in the 2019 edition.

Clinical display I would say. We had a good partnership between de Kock and Rassie. Fairly happy, clinical in terms of the executions by the bowlers. Quinny and I tried to assess the conditions. We pouched on the bad balls, and were able to get a couple of away. Quinny wasn't in his flow at the start. We tried to maximise after the 30th over. We knew they were going to come hard at us, and we would get the opportunities. We did what we have been doing. The semi-final spot is guaranteed for us, so we'll celebrate a bit.

Temba Bavuma, South Africa skipper

Not our best performance. We were under pressure after that partnership. It was a big score. From the batting point of view, we had to have those partnerships, but we had our back against the wall. Those two played fantastically well. It was a small ground and a good surface, but we couldn't do much in those first 10 overs. I think they put themselves in a great position, we were not able to build partnerships, that was disappointing. We have faced adversities with injuries. We will reflect on this one quickly and move to the next one, we don't become a bad team overnight.

New Zealand captain Tom Latham

South Africa hammer New Zealand by 190 runs
Quinton de Kock hit his fourth century of the World Cup and Rassie van der Dussen his second as South Africa thrashed New Zealand by 190 runs on Wednesday to take a step closer to the semi-finals. The Proteas' commanding 357/4 in Pune was built on De Kock's 114 and Van der Dussen's 133. New Zealand, just days after only narrowly falling short of chasing 389 in a five-run defeat by Australia, were never in the hunt as they collapsed to 167 all out inside 36 overs.

STAT: This is the first time South Africa have beaten New Zealand in an ODI World Cup match in six attempts since the 2003 edition.

I thought they bowled pretty well up front. Our run rate was around 4 runs per over. It was a hard working fifty for Quinny (de Kock) and then he guided me. We batted together quite nicely. The pitch got better when the ball got softer, luckily it worked well for us. It's one of those pitches when you hit a good length there's something in it for the bowlers, so we communicated that to our bowlers. Test match lengths work. They kept a lid on us but we knew if we took it deep we could score big later. Quinny was brilliant in reminding me to keep my shape. Be relentless if it's in your area but respect the good ball. Miller and the others were brilliant at the end. 300-320 is what we were talking about in the middle. Very pleased we got over the line by a good margin. Everyone contributed. Out and out team performance.

I think so (best form). I am feeling really good lately. Nice that everything is coming together at an important time for us. They bowled really well upfront, especially Boulty. I felt quite scratchy upfront, I couldn't find my rhythm, I was getting a couple of messages from the guys on the bench to bat through. I just want to keep batting. My career is coming down to a finish, trying to bat as much as I can. If the wicket stays the same, it will be good enough. The wicket does get better under lights. 357 is always a good score, but we are playing against a really good team, let's see what happens.
