IPL 2026: Urvil Patel, Jamie Overton star as CSK beat LSG by 5 wickets

CHENNAI: Chennai Super Kings snapped an eight-year jinx at Chepauk on Sunday, and it took an unlikely hero, Urvil Patel, playing in place of the injured Ayush Mhatre, to script it.

Chasing 204 against Lucknow Super Giants, CSK completed their first 180-plus chase since 2018, powered by Urvil’s astonishing 23-ball 65. Slotted at No. 3 after Sanju Samson’s brisk 28 off 14, the 27-year-old turned the game on its head with a breathtaking burst.

His 13-ball half-century, joint-fastest in IPL history alongside Yashasvi Jaiswal, broke the back of the asking rate on a surface where the ball occasionally gripped. Urvil’s assault ensured CSK raced to half the target inside seven overs.




The carnage began after a quiet start. Avesh Khan’s over disappeared for 25 runs as Urvil hammered three sixes, shifting momentum instantly. Digvesh Rathi suffered a similar fate in the next over, conceding 25 as Urvil surged to 42 off just 10 balls.

With Chepauk roaring, Urvil took on Mohammed Shami, bringing up his fifty with a towering six, then revealing a note from his pocket that read, “This is for you, Papa.”

His approach was uncomplicated but devastatingly effective, repeatedly targeting the midwicket arc. Seven of his eight sixes sailed there, as he relied on timing and brute power rather than innovation.

Though Shahbaz Ahmed eventually dismissed him and a dropped catch on 62 briefly prolonged the onslaught, the damage was already done. CSK still wobbled, 78 off 64 balls should have been routine, but Shivam Dube’s late sixes sealed a five-wicket win.

The victory, CSK’s third straight, lifted them to fifth with 12 points from 11 matches, though a significant net run rate boost eluded them. Earlier, Josh Inglis had lit up Chepauk with a blistering 85 off 33 balls, propelling LSG to a record powerplay score of 91/1. But CSK hit back through Jamie Overton and Noor Ahmad, who tightened the screws on their rivals in the middle overs.

Overton struck twice in the 10th over, getting the wicket of Inglis, who was dismissed while playing the reverse scoop. A late push from Shahbaz Ahmed took LSG past 200, but under lights and against Urvil in full flow, even that proved insufficient.
