India 81/1, need another 278 runs to win

Chasing targets above 300 in Test cricket has historically been a tough challenge for Team India on home soil.

In 26 instances where India faced fourth-innings targets over 300, they’ve managed just one successful chase: a memorable 387 against England in Chennai in 2008.

In that match, Sachin Tendulkar’s unbeaten 103, along with aggressive contributions from Virender Sehwag (83 off 68 balls) and Yuvraj Singh (85*), led India to a historic six-wicket victory.

India made a positive start to reach 81-1 at lunch on the third day of their second test against New Zealand in Pune on Saturday as the hosts chase 359 to win and go level at 1-1 in the three-match series.

Yashasvi Jaiswal went on the attack with cracking boundaries to stay unbeaten on 46, while Shubman Gill was 22 not out, after Mitchell Santner claimed the important wicket of Rohit Sharma for eight.

New Zealand were bowled out for 255 in their second innings after skipper Tom Latham's 86 and handy contributions lower down the order put them in a commanding position to secure a first ever series win in India.

India's highest successful run chase at home is the 387-4 they scored to beat England in Chennai in 2008 on a far better track than the one at Maharashtra Cricket Association Stadium, where the spinners have wreaked havoc.

The hosts are looking to avoid their first series defeat on home soil since losing to England in 2012, with their record of 18 successive home series wins since that 2-1 humbling also on the line.

Resuming on 198-5 with their lead already more than 300 runs on an increasingly tough pitch, New Zealand trotted along nicely in the morning until Ravindra Jadeja castled Tom Blundell for 41 for his first wicket of the match.

Santner, who took 7-53 to give the Black Caps the upper hand on Friday, looked to target Jadeja but misread a looped delivery from the left-arm spinner and was caught in the deep for four.

Former skipper Tim Southee then followed him back into the dugout almost immediately, edging spinner Ravichandran Ashwin to Rohit, who showed quick reflexes to pull off a sharp catch at slip and draw loud cheers from the crowd.

Washington Sundar took a superb running catch in the deep as Ajaz Patel fell for one to Jadeja while William O'Rourke was run out by the bowler for a duck, leaving Glenn Phillips stranded on a well-made 48 not out.

Yashasvi Jaiswal (46*) came out all guns blazing in the chase and he has given India with a solid start.

Rohit sharma (8) looked a bit tentative during his stay in the middle and was caught at short-leg off Mitchell Santner for his first wicket of the session.

Alongside Jaiswal, Shubman Gill remains unbeaten on 22 as India need another 278 runs for a incredible win.

FOUR! Shubman Gill produces another terrific sweep and he once again puts an Ajaz Patel delivery to the fence. A tossed up 87.1 kph delivery from Ajaz but he bowls it too straight. Gill gets down on one knee and smacks the ball to the deep fence.

FOUR! Swept and swept hard! New man in Shubman Gill gets his first boundary of the session and chase. A quicker 91.5 kph delivery from Ajaz Patel at stumps and Gill sweeps it superbly to the left of short fine. India 41/1

Yashasvi Jaiswal survives an LBW review from the Kiwis. Impact Outside Off! A review goes down for New Zealand and it was a pretty bad one. Mitchell Santner comes into the attack and Jaiswal was looking to sweep him across from wide outside off. He got his front leg way out but missed the ball as it struck him on the pad. The Kiwis were unsure but Tom Latham took the review at the last moment. Ball-tracking confirms that the impact is outside off. So, the on-field call of not out stays!

FOUR! Crunched through the off side. Yashasvi Jaiswal has made his intensions pretty clear. Go big or go home. He, this time, dances down the track against Tim Southee and cracks the ball to he cover point fence. The fielder in the deep and no chance to cut it off as the ball raced to the fence in no time. FOUR! Rohit Sharma too is off the mark with a boundary on the on side. William ORourke digs in a short ball angling in and Rohit came up with a terrific pull shot as the ball beat the fine-leg fielder to the fence. IND 14/0 in 1.1 overs

SIX! FOUR! After getting lucky first-ball of the innings, Yashasvi Jaiswal responds in style, smacked Tim Southee for back-to-back boundaries. A cracking hit on the on side that sailed over the deep fence and Jaiswal followed it up with a cut to the deep backward point fence. A rollercoaster start this has been to this 359 chase. Woah! Glenn Phillips almost pulled off an absolute blinder at gully to give India a shock first-ball. Tim Southee got the outside edge of Yashasvi Jaiswal's bat but he had played it with soft hands. Phillips dived low to his left, grabbed the ball but was unsure of the catch. Replays show that the ball just bounced in front of his hand. Jaiswal gets lucky early!

Ravindra Jadeja has been pretty impressive in this morning session on the third day. He has been getting quite a bit of purchase from the surface. The turn and bounce has been really good and the India spinners have varied their pace superbly to get the most off the surface. NZ 232/6

OUT! Bowled! Through the gate! Ravindra Jadeja gets the breakthrough India were looking for early in this morning session. He breaks the 48-run stand as Tom Blundell is knocked over for 41. It was a good length delivery from round the wicket and it went in with the angle. The ball sneaked through between Blundell's bat and pad and crashed into his stumps.

Tom Latham's 86 is the highest score in this Test so far. The Kiwi batters have scored three fifties in the two innings combines while the highest score for India in the first innings was 38 by Jadeja.

Courtesy a Tom Latham crucial 86-run knock and Tom Blundell's unbeaten 30, New Zealand ended Day 2 with a 301 runs lead.

With five wickets still in hand and a lot of time remaining in the Test, the Kiwis will look to bat as long as possible on Day 3 as set India a mammoth target.

Alongside Blundell, Glenn Phillips (9*) will resume the batting for the visitors and will look to attack the India bowlers after the initial overs.

India, on the other hand, are on the backfoot and staring at a series defeat.

Rohit Sharma and co. will have to pull out something extraordinary out of their hat to make a comeback in this contest.

Their first target -- early wickets -- as the hosts look to bundle out the Kiwis as quickly as possible.

If India manage to end the Kiwi second innings in the morning session and restrict their scoring to around 50-70, we will be in for a thrilling chase!

India haven't lost a Test series at home since their defeat to England during the 2012-13 season.

Before the start of this series, India won 18 consecutive series at home.

The highest successful chase for India in Tests at home is 387 runs, which they achieved against England in Chennai in December 2008.

"It was a misjudgment of the pitch, I didn't read the pitch well enough. And we are in this situation..., " said Rohit Sharma after Day 1 of the Bengaluru Test.

Rohit caught the journalists off-guard when he settled into the chair for the post-day media interaction in Bengaluru. It was very unusual to see the Indian captain turn up this early into a series but a sense of usualness gripped the setting when he opened the house with his "chalao talwar" comment.

India stared at their first ever home Test series loss to New Zealand after the visitors claimed a formidable 301-run lead on day two of the second Test in Pune on Friday.

Tom Latham (86) spearheaded New Zealand's batting effort following Mitchell Santner outstanding 7/53, which dismantled the Indian lineup. Latham's innings helped solidify a 103-run first-innings lead, leaving the Kiwis at 198/5 at stumps.

Tom Blundell (30 not out) was at the crease alongside Glenn Phillips (7 not out) when play concluded for the day.
