Match in a nutshell

An all-round bowling performance led by pacer Bhuvneshwar Kumar helped India secure a 38-run win over Sri Lanka in the first T20I in Colombo. Defending 164, India got rid of Minod Bhanuka (10) in the powerplay. Avishka Fernando and Dhananjaya de Silva then tried to steady the Sri Lankan ship but the latter was undone by a ripper from Yuzvendra Chahal in the seventh over. The following over, Fernando was removed by Bhuvneshwar Kumar for 26. Ashen Bandara was then cleaned up by Hardik Pandya in the 13th over as regular wickets kept the hosts on the backfoot. Charith Asalanka threatened to take the game away with his quickfire 44 off 26 balls but Deepak Chahar twin strike pushed the Lankans further back. Bhuvneshwar then returned back and cleaned up the tail as India bundled out Sri Lanka in the penultimate over. Bhuvneshwar topped the wickets' column for India with a four-for. Deepak Chahar bagged a couple of wickets while Krunal, debutant Varun Chakravarthy, Chahal and Hardik managed a wicket apiece. With the win India also took a 1-0 lead in the three-match series.

And, Bhuvneshwar Kumar wraps up the match with the final wicket of Dushmantha Chameera. Krunal Pandya completes a simple catch as India register a comfortable 38-run win. They also take a 1-0 lead in the 3-match series. Bhuvneshwar Kumar finishes with impressive figures of 4/22.

Bhuvneshwar Kumar gets his third wicket of the match. Isuru Udana hits the ball straight down the throat of Suryakumar Yadav at long-on. He walks back for 1. India just a wicket away from victory now.

Maiden T20I wicket for Varun Chakravarthy!!!

Smart glovework from Ishan Kishan and debutant Varun Chakravarthy has his first T20I wicket. Dasun Shanaka goes for the drive but gets beaten by the spin. He goes off-balance and Kishan gets rid of the bails in a flash. Replays confirm that Shanaka's foot was in the air when Kishan removed the bails. Shanaka walks back. Sri Lanka are now 8 down as India inch closer to victory!

OUT! Nine runs and a wicket off the last ball of the over for Bhuvneshwar Kumar. Chamika Karunaratne chops the ball back onto his stumps. He walks back for 3 as India march closer to victory.

Second wicket in the over for Deepak Chahar and his is all pumped up. Wanindu Hasaranga goes for the wild hoick on the leg side but misses the ball completely. The ball crashes into his stumps. Sri Lanka are now 6 down with 54 more to get.

That's the wicket India were looking for! Deepak Chahar gets rid of dangerous Charith Asalanka. Short-pitched delivery from Chahar and Asalanka goes for the pull. Hits it straight to Prithvi Shaw in the deep. Asalanka walks back for 44. SL 111/5 after 15.3 overs.

Hardik Pandya gets his first wicket of the match. Ashen Bandara (9 off 19 balls) was really struggling and Hardik puts his misery to an end. Bandara goes for the hoick but misses the ball completely. The ball crashes into his off stump.

Up and over! Length ball outside off from Hardik Pandya and Charith Asalanka goes inside-out and times the ball to perfection, A loose ball from Hardik gets the deserved treatment. SL 87/3 after 12.3 overs.

What a strike that was from Charith Asalanka. A loose ball from Varun Chakravarthy on the leg side. Asalanka just gave everything on that shot. The ball just clears Krunal Pandya at the deep fence. SL 80/3 after 11.2 overs.
