India vs New Zealand Highlights, 2nd ODI: Daryl Mitchell's heroics lead Kiwis to series-levelling victory

IND vs NZ Highlights, 2nd ODI: New Zealand produced a composed all-round performance to defeat India by seven wickets in the second ODI at the Niranjan Shah Stadium on Wednesday, levelling the three-match series 1-1. On a sluggish surface, the visitors adapted far better than the hosts, successfully chasing down a target of 285 to finish at 286 for three in 47.3 overs.

Daryl Mitchell was the standout performer, scoring a magnificent 131 not out off 117 balls. He showcased excellent control and versatility, especially with his sweep shots, to register his third ODI century against India.

Will Young played a crucial supporting role, scoring a fluent 87 off 98 deliveries. The pair stitched together a match-defining 162-run partnership for the second wicket, batting with patience and clarity as the required rate hovered above six an over.

A dropped catch by Prasidh Krishna when Mitchell was on 80 proved expensive and allowed the New Zealand batter to take the game away from India.

India’s spin attack struggled once again on home turf. Kuldeep Yadav and Ravindra Jadeja conceded 126 runs from 18 overs for just one wicket, while New Zealand’s spinners were far more effective. Debutant left-arm spinner Jayden Lennox returned figures of 1 for 42 from 10 overs, and Michael Bracewell chipped in with 1 for 34, keeping India in check through the middle overs.

Earlier, India posted 284 for seven, thanks largely to KL Rahul’s gritty unbeaten 112 off 91 balls. Rahul held the innings together after India slipped from 99 for one to 118 for four. Captain Shubman Gill scored 56 but fell to a mistimed pull, while Virat Kohli was bowled for 23 and Shreyas Iyer departed cheaply. Ravindra Jadeja added 27 in a vital 73-run stand with Rahul.

Despite early pressure from Harshit Rana and Mohammed Siraj, New Zealand remained composed to seal the chase comfortably. The series-deciding third ODI will be played in Indore on Sunday.

India drafted in seam-bowling all-rounder Nitish Kumar Reddy as New Zealand won the toss and opted to field in the second ODI at the Niranjan Shah Stadium on Wednesday. The hosts currently lead the three-match series 1-0, having registered a win in the opening ODI in Vadodara.

Reddy comes into the playing XI following Washington Sundar’s exclusion from the remainder of the series. The off-spin all-rounder was sidelined after sustaining a left rib injury and will continue to be monitored by the BCCI medical team.

Reflecting on the toss and conditions, India captain Shubman Gill said, “We would actually have preferred to bat first, based on the last few games here. Even yesterday there wasn’t much dew, and the players feel the surface tends to slow down as the innings goes on, so batting first looked the better option. Personally, I felt really good in the last game - the rhythm and fluency were there, and it’s always nice to contribute. Hopefully I can build on that and produce a big one today.”

Gill also underlined the importance of the middle overs in the series opener, adding, “The middle overs were crucial for us last time. They got off to a decent start, but the way we pulled things back – especially with the fast bowlers picking up wickets in those overs – made a big difference. It’s not always easy in these conditions, but they mixed up their pace and variations really well.”

New Zealand, on the other hand, handed a debut to left-arm spinner Jayden Lennox, who replaces leg-spinner Adithya Ashok in the XI. Assessing the pitch and conditions, New Zealand skipper Michael Bracewell said, “It looks like a really good surface, and hopefully the dew comes into play later in the evening, which should make things a bit nicer for batting under lights.”

Bracewell also reflected on the narrow defeat in the first ODI and the challenge of playing in India, saying, “The last game was a tight one and I was proud of how the boys fought right till the end. We gave ourselves a chance with a couple of late wickets, and today we’re looking to keep taking wickets through the middle and build that pressure.”

Highlighting the experience for his young side, he added, “We’ve got a lot of young players in this side, and playing in front of big crowds and all that noise is a great learning experience for them. It’s different conditions for us here, especially with 40,000 people backing the home side, but it’s a challenge we’re really excited about.”

IND vs NZ 2nd ODI Live Score: PITCH REPORT
We are in batting paradise. This is a superb pitch to bat on. Dimensions - 66m and 65m square boundaries, 75m straight down. This is a belter of a pitch.

As a bowler, you still got to look to take wickets upfront. The new ball will swing a little bit, it'll move a touch. I'd be tempted to set straighter fields. You want the batters to hit straight, don't give them anything short. Have a theory on being really straight and having those catching men.

One of the pitches you can actually hit through the line. Variation of pace is going to be important. Not much dew here. You might want to bat first.

With the ball, he has picked up 18 wickets at an average of 29.72 and an economy rate of 4.54, with best figures of 3/29.

During South Africa A’s tour of India last year, Badoni struck a half-century — a 66 in the second unofficial ODI — and returned bowling figures of 0/15 in four overs and 0/43 in seven overs across two appearances. He also impressed during Australia A’s tour of India, claiming three wickets in two matches at an average of 16.33 and scoring 21 in his lone innings.

In the IPL, Badoni has represented Lucknow Super Giants in 56 matches, batting in 46 innings. The middle-order batter has amassed 963 runs at an average of 26.75 and a strike rate of 138.56, registering six half-centuries, with a top score of 74.

IND vs NZ 2nd ODI Live Score: Why Ayush Badoni? Team India breaks silence
Ahead of the second ODI against New Zealand, India’s batting coach Sitanshu Kotak explained the rationale behind Ayush Badoni’s inclusion in the squad following Washington Sundar’s injury. Kotak pointed to the Delhi youngster’s consistent performances for India A and in the Indian Premier League, highlighting his ability to contribute with both bat and ball, particularly his right-arm offbreaks, which make him a near like-for-like replacement for the Tamil Nadu all-rounder.

Badoni was drafted into the squad after Sundar was ruled out of the remainder of the ODI series against New Zealand. His inclusion, despite the presence of established all-round options such as Riyan Parag, Rinku Singh and Axar Patel, raised eyebrows, especially given that he had not previously been part of the national setup.

Addressing the media, Kotak said, "He has been playing, he has been performing, he has played some India A one-day and he has performed and particularly, obviously it is selectors who pick the team, but for any common man when Washington's out, you cannot, normally no team would go with only five bowlers, like say for example last game if we had only five bowlers and Washington got injured on fourth, fifth over, then who will bowl those overs, so every team would like have sixth bowling option, sometimes if it is an all-rounder like Washington then a equally good bowler, sometimes it might be a more of a batter who can bowl."

Emphasising the need for flexibility within the XI, he added, "If required, somebody should be able to bowl four, five or three/four overs, whatever is needed. He has scored a couple of 50s for India A and can bowl. He has performed well in the IPL and white-ball cricket, so good luck to him."

IND vs NZ 2nd ODI Live Score: Ayush Badoni or Nitish Reddy?
Ayush Badoni or Nitish Reddy — who gets the nod in today’s XI?

Ayush Badoni has been added to the squad as cover for the injured Washington Sundar and has already linked up with the team in Rajkot.

However, a debut appears improbable at this stage.

The team management is expected to persist with Nitish Reddy in the playing XI, with no major changes anticipated to the rest of the side for today’s ODI.
12:18 (IST) Jan 14
Ayush Badoni had just wrapped up his practice session on Monday and was heading back to the hotel when a message popped up on his phone. It was the moment he had been waiting for — his maiden India call-up. Keeping his composure, Badoni first showed the message to his Delhi coach and former India cricketer Sarandeep Singh before embracing him in an emotional hug.

Badoni was named as a replacement for Washington Sundar in India’s squad for the remaining two ODIs against New Zealand after the all-rounder was ruled out with a rib injury. Washington sustained the injury during the series opener in Vadodara on Sunday.

“He was really happy, and I was very happy for him. He truly deserved it. He has worked extremely hard. Most people know him as a batter who can clear the ropes, hit boundaries at will and play long innings. Ask anyone and he’ll be tagged as a proper batter. But he is also an excellent off-spinner, and he has evolved into one purely through hard work,” Sarandeep told TimesofIndia.com in an exclusive interview.

Ravindra Jadeja’s hometown is in celebratory mode, with streets and markets alive ahead of Sankranti and the kite festival on Wednesday, a day that also hosts the second ODI. For Jadeja, though, the festive mood offers little distraction. His attention is firmly fixed on a personal battle — safeguarding his status as India’s frontline ODI spin-bowling all-rounder in the face of growing competition from Axar Patel.

Jadeja’s intent was evident during the optional training session on the eve of the match. On Tuesday, the usually easy-going all-rounder trained with marked purpose, spending nearly an hour honing his batting before putting himself through a prolonged bowling workout. With the 2027 ODI World Cup less than two years away, the urgency is unmistakable. Jadeja is aware that time and opportunities are becoming more precious, and his extended workload reflects a player keen to reinforce his relevance as the fight for places intensifies.

After a closer-than-expected win in Vadodara, India will aim to address a few exposed weaknesses when they take on New Zealand in the second ODI at the Niranjan Shah Stadium on Wednesday. The hosts will be keen to improve their effectiveness with the new ball after failing to strike early in the series opener, while the spinners will look to play a more decisive role during the middle overs. India will also be mindful of preserving their proud record of never having lost a home ODI series against New Zealand.

With all-rounder Washington Sundar ruled out due to a rib injury, the focus will be on how India reshuffles their combination. Delhi batter Ayush Badoni has been added to the squad, though his inclusion in the playing XI remains uncertain. India’s formidable top order — Rohit Sharma, captain Shubman Gill and Virat Kohli — will once again look to capitalise on what is expected to be a placid surface against an inexperienced New Zealand bowling attack. Encouraging signs have also come from the middle order, with Shreyas Iyer’s composed 49 and KL Rahul’s unbeaten 29. However, the hosts will want to avoid a repeat of the batting collapse that followed Kohli’s dismissal in the first ODI, which allowed the chase to stretch deep into the innings.

IND vs NZ 2nd ODI Live Score: New Zealand’s fightback and key takeaways
Despite their loss, New Zealand showed promise in the first ODI.

A 117-run opening partnership between Devon Conway and Henry Nicholls laid a solid foundation, while Daryl Mitchell’s explosive 84 helped the Kiwis post a competitive total of 300/8.

Late breakthroughs by Kyle Jamieson and contributions from Mitchell Hay and Kristian Clarke showcased depth in the New Zealand lineup, even as dropped catches proved costly.

Rookie leg-spinner Adithya Ashok gained valuable experience, and New Zealand will look to tighten execution in Rajkot.

India, meanwhile, will aim to capitalise on Kohli and Rohit’s continued dominance while integrating backups effectively, ensuring momentum as the ODI series edges closer to conclusion.

India vs New Zealand Live Score: Kohli riding high on confidence
Kohli’s current form appears to be fueled by freedom from expectations and criticism. He has added extra colors to his batting, attacking from the outset and leaving no run behind.

His extraordinary consistency helped him become the fastest player to 28,000 runs across formats, achieving the milestone in Vadodara.

While India’s batting has shone, there remains scope for improvement in bowling, particularly among spinners who struggled with grip and turn in the opening game.

The fast bowlers’ improvisation provided breakthroughs, but a more supportive surface would be beneficial for spinners in the upcoming Rajkot clash.

Kohli’s brilliance, however, remains the cornerstone of India’s charge, keeping the team confident amid injuries and tactical challenges.

IND vs NZ Live Score: Veterans lead the charge
Kohli and Rohit Sharma continue to thrive in the ODI series’ final leg of their illustrious careers.

In the first ODI, Kohli narrowly missed his 54th ODI century, scoring a fluent 93 off 91 balls, a knock that set India up for victory despite a brief middle-order wobble.

Skipper Shubman Gill contributed a measured half-century, while Shreyas Iyer fell just short by one run.

Rohit Sharma’s dazzling start in the innings further consolidated India’s strong batting performance.

With New Zealand’s side heavily depleted, India’s veterans have been instrumental in keeping the team ahead, combining attacking strokeplay with strategic calm to ensure the hosts maintain momentum in the series.

IND vs NZ 2nd ODI Live Score: Backup plans amid player absences
Even before the first ODI, India had to cope with injury issues.

Rishabh Pant was ruled out of the series after a blow while batting against Indian throw-down staff, prompting the drafting of Dhruv Jurel as a potential specialist batter.

All-rounder Tilak Varma is also unavailable for at least the first three T20Is due to a groin injury.

While the T20 squad differs from the ODI lineup, the overlap of key players underlines the importance of maintaining squad depth and readiness.

Despite the contingencies, India’s focus remains on maximising performance with the available players, especially veterans like Kohli and Rohit Sharma, who are leading by example and setting the tone for younger teammates both on and off the field.

India vs New Zealand Live Score: Kohli’s brilliance offsets injury woes
Virat Kohli’s imperious form has helped India weather mounting injury concerns as they aim to seal the ODI series against New Zealand in the second game today.

India opened the series with a four-wicket win in Vadodara, but the hosts suffered a blow with Washington Sundar sidelined for the remainder of the series due to a side strain. Selectors quickly roped in Delhi’s Ayush Badoni, and it is expected that another all-rounder, Nitish Kumar Reddy, could feature in the eleven given head coach Gautam Gambhir’s preference for multi-skilled players.

The management is keen to maintain balance in the squad while also ensuring adequate cover across batting and bowling.

With the T20 World Cup less than a month away, India’s white-ball setup would prefer no further disruptions, highlighting the critical role Kohli’s consistency is playing in keeping the team on course.

IND vs NZ Live Score: India look to seal series in Rajkot
Hello and welcome to the live coverage of the second ODI in the three-match series between India and New Zealand in Rajkot.

India currently lead the series 1-0 after a four-wicket win over the visitors in the series opener. Run-machine Virat Kohli starred in the chase, scoring 93 off 91 balls—his fifth consecutive fifty-plus score in ODIs.

India will be hoping for another match-defining performance from the batting maestro as they aim to seal the series in the second game itself.
IND vs NZ Highlights, 2nd ODI: New Zealand outplayed India on a slow surface to register a seven-wicket win in the second ODI at the Niranjan Shah Stadium, levelling the three-match series 1-1. Chasing 285, the visitors finished at 286 for three in 47.3 overs, led by a brilliant unbeaten 131 from Daryl Mitchell.

Will Young supported him with a composed 87 as the pair added 162 runs for the second wicket. India’s spinners struggled to make an impact, conceding heavily, while New Zealand’s slower bowlers controlled the middle overs.

Earlier, India managed 284 for seven largely due to KL Rahul’s fighting 112 not out, which held the innings together after a mid-innings collapse.

Shubman Gill scored 56, but Virat Kohli and Shreyas Iyer fell cheaply. A dropped catch when Mitchell was on 80 proved costly as New Zealand stayed calm to seal the chase.

The series decider will be played in Indore.
