NAGPUR: City teenage sensation Rohan Gurbani has been selected in the Indian junior badminton team for the Europe tour.
Seventeen-year-old Rohan will represent India in the Dutch Junior International tournament scheduled to be held at Haarlem, Netherlands from February 26 to March 1.
After a gap of a couple of days, the Indian team will travel to Berlin to play in the German Junior Open slated to be held from March 4 to 8.
Both Dutch Open and German Open are Junior International Grand Prix tournaments.
In-form Rohan is delighted with his selection for the Europe tour and determined to make the most of the opportunity.
"This is my third selection in the national junior team. Obviously, I am very happy. It is always an honour to represent the country. I want to give credit to my parents, all the coaches at PPBA and support staff for my selection. I want to make my good form count in Europe," said Rohan, a former U-17 national champion.
Rohan, who has already reached Holland along with the other team members, will take on Egor Borisov of Russia in the Under-19 boys singles first round on Wednesday.
In the German Open, Rohan will lock horns with Danylo Shevchuk of Ukraine in the opening round on March 4. This is the third time Rohan would be representing the country in the international tournaments.
Rohan, who has been training at the Bengaluru-based Prakash Padukone Badminton Academy since 2017, has been in outstanding form in the last few months. Establishing himself as probably the best player of his age in India, Rohan finished a creditable runner-up in the U-19 boys singles during the 44th Junior National Badminton Championship last month at Rajahmundry, Andhra Pradesh.
Starting as ninth seed, Rohan was on a giant-killing spree and stormed into the final without losing a single game which caught the eyes of the national selectors.
However, in the summit clash with his regular academy training partner Maisnam Meiraba—who was top seed - despite leading in both the games.
On a scholarship of Air India since 2019, Rohan impressed all with his quality display including the chief junior national coach Sanjay Mishra.
"I am expecting a good performance from Rohan in the upcoming international tournaments. He has been doing quite well of late and should come up with some surprising results in Europe," said Mishra.
Last September, Rohan was picked up in the Indian squad for the BWF World Junior U-19 Badminton Championship held in Russia. Earlier in October 2018, Rohan first represented the country at the U-17 and U-15 Asian Badminton Championship held at Myanmar.
